Chiropractic Care During Pregnancy

pregnancy chiropractic care in houston

Are you pregnant or do you love someone who is? Did you know that chiropractic care can help a woman stay comfortable during pregnancy and can also reduce some of the more difficult physical symptoms that many women experience when they’re pregnant?

Some people feel unsure about chiropractic care during pregnancy because it seems like it might endanger the mom or the baby. However, chiropractors are trained to work on pregnant women. They know how to adjust their care so that it is completely safe for both mom and baby. In fact, some chiropractors choose to get advanced training so they can specialize in the care of pregnant women. Unless you have a particular condition that contraindicates chiropractic care, it’s fine to see a chiropractor during pregnancy.

How Can a Chiropractor Help?

When you’re pregnant, several things can cause spinal misalignment. A heavy, protruding belly can pull the spine out of place. Many pregnant women also adjust their gait and posture to accommodate the belly, which can throw their backs out of place. The pelvis also shifts and changes during pregnancy, which can change how a woman has to carry herself.

This misalignment can cause everything from difficulty sleeping to back, neck, hip, and leg pain and more. When the spine gets realigned in chiropractic treatment, it can alleviate all of these symptoms. Since pregnancy is an ongoing condition, at least for a while, regular adjustments may be necessary to keep the spine in place.

Many women swear that chiropractic care during pregnancy helps them feel better throughout the pregnancy. It can even help alleviate the nausea that often comes along with the first trimester. By keeping the spine in place while the body is changing so much, many women find that they can keep more food down and don’t feel nauseated nearly as often.

Chiropractic care during pregnancy can also help labor and delivery go easier. Many times, spinal misalignment causes or comes alongside pelvic misalignment. Since the baby has to come out through the pelvis, it makes sense that labor would be easier with the pelvis in the right place. Chiropractors can help make sure that it is aligned properly so that labor can go as easy as possible.

Some chiropractors can also help turn breech babies around so they are facing the right direction. Using something called the Webster Technique, a chiropractor will help balance the pelvis and take pressure off some of the ligaments and tendons. When performed starting in the 8h month, this maneuver seems to help babies turn upside down for delivery, as they should.
