Mental Attitude: What Is Dementia? Dementia is not a specific disease. It’s a term that describes a wide range of symptoms associated with a decline in memory or other thinking skills severe enough to reduce a person’s ability to perform everyday activities. Alzheimer’s disease accounts for 60-80% of cases. Vascular dementia, which occurs after a stroke, is the 2nd most common type of dementia. At least two of the following core mental functions must be significantly impaired to be considered dementia: memory, communication and language, ability to focus and pay attention, reasoning and judgment, and visual perception. Health Alert: Physical Health and Depression. Physical health is linked to depression risk. People with cardiovascular disease, diabetes, psoriasis, and a number of other illnesses and conditions have a much higher risk of developing depression than other “healthy” individuals. Unpleasant or extreme circumstances may also raise depression risk, such as unemployment, disasters, wars, and losing loved ones.

Diet: Tomatoes! Men who eat lots of tomatoes and tomato-based products may have a lower risk for stroke. Tomatoes are rich in the antioxidant lycopene. Men who had the highest levels of lycopene in their blood (compared to their peers with the lowest levels) were 55% less likely to have a stroke and 59% less likely to have an ischemic stroke. Exercise: Move It! Even 30 minutes of physical activity 5 days a week (20 minutes 3 times a week for vigorous exercise, such as jogging) can help lower LDL (bad) cholesterol and raise HDL (good) cholesterol. You don’t have to exercise for 30 minutes straight; you can break it up into 10-minute increments.

Chiropractic: How Important Is Motion? After soft tissue injuries to the muscles, ligaments, tendons, and fascia that result in motion restriction, a high incidence of osteoarthritis (degeneration) can be seen on x-ray within 5 years. American Journal of Medicine, 2001

 

Wellness/Prevention: Safety For Your Children. 37% of all children under 16 years old are incorrectly restrained in the car. 23% are so poorly restrained that a collision would have very serious consequences. With the correct use of safety equipment, fewer children will be injured and killed in traffic accidents. Safety errors are highest in

children aged 4-7 years. The 5 most common mistakes are misplaced seat belts, twisted belts, loose straps, belt under the arm instead of over the shoulder, and young children (<135 cm or <4.5 feet) sitting in a seat without side support.

Mental Attitude: Don’t Choke! For many skilled athletes, the movements they execute in an athletic event have been practiced so much, they occur with little conscious thought. However, when athletes don’t perform well under pressure, they may focus too much on their movements which causes their performance to decrease even more.

Right handed athletes who squeezed a ball in their left hand before an athletic event were more able to perform under pressure. It’s thought that clenching with the left hand helps activate the right side of the brain that is associated with

automated behaviors, such as those used by athletes to dribble, kick, shoot, swing, etc.

Health Alert: Improper Rinsing? The improper use of neti pots, as well as other devices for rinsing out the

sinuses, has been linked to a higher risk of infection. The FDA warns that if they are not used properly, the user runs a risk of developing serious infections, even potentially fatal ones. The devices are safe and useful overall, as long as they are properly used and cleaned. FDA, September 2012

 

Diet: Why Some Fats May Be Bad. Some fats (like animal fats) are linked to ailments like heart disease and diabetes while others (like those from fish, plants, and nuts) have health benefits. Why the difference? The results of one study suggest that some fats encourage the growth of harmful bacteria in the digestive system. Our bodies recognize those fats and launch an immune response. Exercise: Get Fit Dad! According to a team of experts at the University of Melbourne’s Department of Zoology, a father’s obesity negatively impacts sperm, which results in smaller fetuses, poor pregnancy success, and decreased placental development. Society for Reproductive Biology, August 2012

Wellness/Prevention: Healthy Lifestyle. According to the World Health Organization, hypertension is the leading cause of mortality in the world, responsible for 7 million deaths a year (15% of all deaths). Healthy behaviors regarding alcohol, physical activity, vegetable intake, and body weight reduce the risk of hypertension by two thirds. Having two healthy lifestyle factors reduced the risk of hypertension by 50% in men and 30% in women.

Mental Attitude: Violent Images? People who watched more than four hours of TV a day relating to the 9/11 attacks and Iraq War coverage were more likely to report both acute and post-traumatic stress symptoms over time. According to study author Roxane Cohen Silver, PhD, “[It’s] important for people to be aware that there is no psychological benefit to repeated exposure to graphic images of horror.” Psychological Science, September 2012

 

Health Alert: Bad Belly Fat! People with a high waist-to-hip ratio (those with big bellies, but a normal body mass index score) are 2.75x more likely to die from a cardiovascular event. Mayo Clinic, September 2012

 

Diet: Junk, TV, and Income. Preschoolers from low-income neighborhoods and kids who spend more than two hours a day in front of a TV or video-game console have at least one thing in common: a thirst for sugary soda and juice. 54.5% of 4-5 year olds from poorer neighborhoods drank at least one soda per week, compared to 40.8% of kids from higher socioeconomic backgrounds. Preschoolers from low-income areas also drank less milk and consumed more fruit juice, which, like soda, is linked to rising sugar intake. Researchers found similar drinking habits among preschoolers who spent more than two hours of “screen time” per day watching TV or playing video games. Kids from poorer neighborhoods sat in front of screens more often, and drank larger volumes of sweetened beverages. Just 30% of children ate recommended amounts of fruits and vegetables, and only 23.5% consumed the recommended amount of servings of grain products. University of Alberta, August 2012

 

Exercise: Exercise and Cancer Recovery? Studies have shown the powerful effect exercise can have on cancer care and recovery. For patients who have gone through breast or colon cancer treatment, regular exercise has been found to reduce recurrence by up to 50%. Mayo Clinic, September 2012

 

Chiropractic: What Causes Pain? One possibility is nerve pain. When a nerve becomes “pinched,” compressed, or inflamed due to an impinging or degenerated disk, the nerves that innervate the spine can become injured. This mechanism can lead to a radiculopathy, where pain radiates down your arm or leg.

Wellness/Prevention: Drink Water! Water is your body’s principle chemical component and makes up 60% of your body weight. Water flushes toxins out of vital organs, carries nutrients to cells and provides a moist environment for ear, nose, and throat tissues. Lack of water can lead to dehydration, and even mild dehydration (as low as 1-2% loss of normal water volume) can drain your energy and make you tired.

Mental Attitude: Think You Are Fat? Researchers found that normal weight teens who perceive themselves as fat are more likely to grow up to be fat. 59% of girls who felt fat as a teen became overweight in adulthood while 31% of girls who did not consider themselves fat during adolescence were found to be overweight. Normal weight girls were more likely than boys to rate themselves as overweight (22% of girls vs. 9% of the boys). One reason for weight gain in later years may be due to psychosocial stress, which can be associated with gaining weight. Under this scenario, the psychosocial stress related to having (or not having) an ideal body type, along with the perception of oneself as overweight, can result in weight gain. Another explanation may be that young people who see themselves as fat often change their eating habits by skipping meals, which can lead to obesity. Also, a diet you can’t maintain over time will be counterproductive, as the body tries to maintain the weight you had before you started to diet.

Health Alert: Depression Is A World-Wide Problem. It’s widely believe that depression is a phenomenon of Western culture, but researchers who analyzed studies involving over 480,000 people across 91 countries have found the opposite is true. They estimate the rate of depression in Middle Eastern and some Asian countries (~9%) is twice that found in countries like the United States and Australia (~4%). World Health Organization, 2010

 

Diet: Bad BBQ News! Barbecue can sabotage your waistline. A 20 ounce T-bone steak can weigh in at 1,540 calories, with 124 grams of fat. A cheeseburger has 750 calories and 45 grams of fat. Pork or beef ribs come from the fattiest part of the animal. Healthier options include pork tenderloin, skinless chicken breast, and lean ground beef.

Chiropractic: Motion and Nutrition. Cartilage is avascular, meaning it does not receive nutrition via blood vessels. Like a sponge, it takes in fluid and releases the fluid when compression is applied. Wellness/Prevention: Lose To Gain? People who are overweight or obese could gain ten years worth of health benefits by simply losing 20 pounds. Modest weight loss (average 14 lbs) reduced the risk of individuals developing Type 2 diabetes by 58%. Weight loss of just 10% of a person’s body weight has been shown to have long-term impact on sleep apnea, hypertension, quality of life, and to slow the decline in mobility that occurs as people age.

Mental Attitude: Sleep Tight? Children with excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS), despite little indication of short sleep from traditional measurements, were more likely to experience problems with learning, attention/hyperactivity and conduct than children without EDS. Health Alert: Obesity Projections! At current projections, 42% of the US population will be obese by 2030, with 11% categorized as severely obese. Severe obesity is defined as a body mass index over 40 or roughly 100 pounds overweight. $550 billion could be saved in the next 20 years just by keeping obesity rates at the current level! Diet: Protein and Diabetes. Diabetes risk increases with higher intake of total protein and animal protein. For every 5% of calories consumed from protein instead of carbohydrate or fat, the risk of developing diabetes increased 30%. Increased animal protein intake coincided with increased intakes of saturated fat, cholesterol,

and heme iron, and with increased body mass index, waist circumference, and blood pressure. Vegetable protein intake was not associated with diabetes risk. Diabetes Care, May 2012

 

Exercise: Cancer and Exercise. Physical activity is linked to lower rates of breast and colon cancer deaths. Exercise helps moderate insulin levels, reduce inflammation and possibly improve the immune response. Even though direct effects of physical activity on cancer are not definitely proven, given that physical activity is generally safe, improves quality of life for cancer patients, and has numerous other health benefits, adequate physical activity should be a standard part of cancer care. Mental Attitude: No Emails? Being cut off from work email significantly reduces stress and improves focus. Heart rate monitors were attached to computer users in an office setting, while software sensors detected how often they switched windows. People who read email changed screens twice as often and were in a steady “high alert” state. Those removed from email for five days reported feeling better able to do their jobs and stay on task, with fewer stressful and time-wasting interruptions. UC Irvine and US Army, May 2012

 

Health Alert: Misusing Prescription Drugs At A Young Age! The peak risk for misusing prescription pain relievers occurs in mid-adolescence, specifically about 16 years old and earlier. Clinicians and public health professionals are prescribing more pain relievers, and research suggests an increased misuse of these drugs and increased rates of overdose deaths. Each year, 1 in 60 young people (between 12-21 years old) begin using prescription pain relievers outside the boundaries of what their doctor intended.

Diet: How Much Protein Do I Need? For healthy adults, an estimator used for daily protein intake is 0.36 grams per 1 pound of body weight. Formula = 0.36 grams/pound of body weight. For example, if you weigh

Exercise: Jogging For Life. Jogging 1-2.5 hr/week increases the life expectancy of men by 6.2 years and women by 5.6 years. Jogging improves oxygen uptake, increases insulin sensitivity, improves lipid profiles (raising HDL and lowering triglycerides), lowers blood pressure, reduces platelet aggregation, increases fibrinolytic activity, improves cardiac function, bone density, immune function, reduces inflammation markers, prevents obesity, and improves psychological function. Men who regularly consume foods rich in flavonoids (such as berries, apples, certain vegetables, tea and red wine) may significantly reduce their risk for developing Parkinson’s disease. Health Alert: Stressed? The risk for coronary heart disease and stroke increases by 30% in a person whose partner has cancer. The cause is probably the negative stress to which the cancer patient’s partner is exposed. Previous studies show that stress can affect the nervous system, blood pressure, and inflammation, increasing the risk of developing coronary heart disease and stroke. Diet: Pain Relief. The supplement Methylsulfonylmethane gave osteoarthritis patients relief from symptoms of pain and physical dysfunction. Osteoarthritis Cartilage, 2008

 

Exercise: Being Fit. Improving or maintaining physical fitness appears to help obese and overweight children reach a healthy weight. During a four-year study, obese and overweight girls and boys who achieved fitness were 2.5 to 5 times more likely to reach a healthy weight than those who stayed underfit. Obesity, April 2012

 

Chiropractic: Slowing Degeneration? Morphologic changes in the endplate that occur with advancing age or degeneration can interfere with normal disk nutrition and further the spinal degenerative process. Degeneration decreases the ability of the spine to move through a full range of motion, which alters the integrity of the proteoglycans and water concentration, reducing the number of viable cells with decreased movement of solutes in and out of the disk. Wellness/Prevention: Unhealthy Snacks, Sodas and Watching TV. In a study of obesity among European children, Dr. Yannis Manios, Assistant Professor at Harokopio University in Athens, writes, “We found that many countries are lacking clear guidelines on healthy eating and active play. However, there is good evidence linking sedentary behavior (like TV watching) with subsequent obesity. Therefore, TV-watching in kindergartens should be replaced by more active, non-competitive, fun activities which will promote the participation of the whole class and help children to achieve optimal growth, health and well-being. Similarly at home, TVs in the bedroom and unhealthy snacks in the kitchen cupboard are a bad idea. Parents should also remember that their role is not only to

provide healthy food and drink options but to act as a role model themselves, since kids are copying their behaviors.”

Mental Attitude: Meditation. Adults with memory impairment and memory loss may benefit from mantra-based meditation (12 minutes of meditation per day for 8 weeks). Mantra-based meditation has demonstrated a positive effect on patients’ emotional responses to stress, fatigue and anxiety. Findings revealed a substantial increase in cerebral blood flow in the patients’ prefrontal, superior frontal, and superior parietal cortices, and also better cognitive function.

Health Alert: Diabetics And Stroke. 26 million Americans have diabetes, and more than half are younger than 65. The longer you have diabetes, the higher your risk for stroke. Compared to people without diabetes (after considering other factors such as age, smoking history, physical activity, history of heart disease, blood pressure and cholesterol), the risk of stroke increased 70% in people with diabetes for less than 5 years, 80% in people with diabetes for 5-10 years and three- fold in people with diabetes for 10 years or more. Diet: Seeing Things? Hungry people see food-related words more clearly than people who’ve just eaten. This change in vision happens at the earliest perceptual stages, before higher parts of the brain have a chance to change the messages coming from the eyes. Psychological Science, March 2012

 

Exercise: Good Reasons. Exercise helps to alleviate low-back pain, helps to reduce the amount of insulin required to control blood sugar levels in Type I (insulin-dependent) diabetics and improves mental alertness.

Chiropractic: Hold Your Head Up! “Head in forward posture can add up to thirty pounds of abnormal leverage on the cervical spine. This can pull the entire spine out of alignment. Forward head posture (FHP) may result in the loss of 30% of vital lung capacity. Wellness/Prevention: Avoid Absenteeism. The US is losing $226 billion per year due to employee absenteeism. A worker is less likely to take sick leave if their supervisor offers support (lightened work load or stress management training) when an employee is experiencing psychosomatic stress symptoms. The worker feels inclined to reciprocate the supportive treatment by keeping their work effort high.

Mental Attitude: Music and Emotions. Music can evoke positive emotions, which in turn can lower stress levels. In a survey study, positive emotions were experienced more often and more intensively in connection with music listening. The more the participants liked the music, the less stress they experienced. Health Alert: Slow Brain Growth In Babies Linked To Depression During Pregnancy! Many women experience a roller coaster of emotions during pregnancy: stress, confusion, fear, sadness and depression. Babies whose mothers are depressed during pregnancy have a greater chance of growing slower, resulting in the head and body showing retarded growth. Also, antidepressants increase the risk of slow growth in the development of babies’ brains.

Diet: High-Fat Diets Increase Colon Cancer Risk. Eating too much fat and sugar puts a person at greater risk for colon cancer and obesity. In normal tissue from patients with colon cancer, they found that epigenetic marks on genes involved in breaking down carbohydrates, lipids and amino acids (abundant in the fatty Western diet) appeared to have been retrained. Epigenetic marks are chemical modifications that serve as on/off switches for many genes. These foods are changing the methylation patterns on a person’s insulin genes so that they express differently, pumping out more insulin than the body requires. Exercise: Exercise Linked To Change In DNA. Exercise almost immediately alters DNA in healthy but inactive men and women. Although the genetic makeup is not altered, DNA molecules change structurally and chemically when a person exercises. One researcher noted, “Our muscles are really plastic. We often say ‘You are what you eat.’ Well, muscle adapts to what you do. If you don’t use it, you lost it and this is one of the mechanisms that allow that to happen.”

Wellness/Prevention: How Much Selenium? Houston – Ever wake up with a stiff neck?  Or, have you given up on trying to look out the back window in your car because your neck hurts so much when you try?

If you suffer with neck pain, you probably take over-the-counter pain relievers.  Most people with neck pain do.  But, what if there was another way that not only worked better but also didn’t have the side effects associated with those pain relievers? Would you be interested?

That’s why you may be interested in new research published in January in the Annals of Internal Medicine.

Here’s what the researchers discovered, according to Chiropractic Economics:

“Two-hundred-seventy-two patients aged 18 to 65 with nonspecific neck pain for two to 12 weeks were randomly assigned to receive SMT, medication, or home exercise with advice for 12 weeks. Up to one year after treatment, patients having 12 weeks of SMT reported greater pain relief than patients in the medication group. Patients in the home exercise with advice group reported just as much pain relief as those in the SMT group over the same period. However, patients having SMT reported that they were more satisfied with care than those in either of the other groups.

“The researchers conclude that SMT and home exercise are similarly effective to each other and both are more effective than medication for neck pain.”

After reading this, you may be asking yourself…

 

What Is “SMT”?

 

SMT is “spinal manipulative therapy.”  Chiropractors often call SMT an “adjustment” and Chiropractors are well trained and the leaders in delivering SMT.

For a very long time, the medical community frowned upon SMT and Chiropractic.  Not only was there a lack of research… some actually said SMT performed by Chiropractors was dangerous.

Over the years, this has changed.  First, research was published that showed the safety and efficacy of SMT performed by Chiropractors.

Many open-minded and progressive medical doctors not only embraced SMT, they started referring to Chiropractors.  Some even incorporated SMT into their practices.

It has been wonderful to see what was once called “quackery” accepted into mainstream medicine and smart doctors working hand-in-hand with Chiropractors to give patients the best possible treatments and care.

But, here’s something a little weird.  The research on safety and efficacy mentioned a couple paragraphs back was for back pain, not neck pain. Even though the treatments (SMT) were the same and the structure (the spine) was the same, skeptics squawked that there was, “no proof.”

They said, “the neck is not the low back.”  That’s why it is so nice to see research specifically designed for the neck showing the benefits of SMT. Maybe now more research will be done and more skeptics will be silenced.  The more research, the better, and more doctors from different disciplines working together means more benefits to patients.

 

Do You Get “Phantom” Text Messages?

 

Technology can be wonderful. But, it can also cause problems.  Technology has given us life-saving medical procedures and life-ending nuclear weapons.

Clearly, it’s all about how technology is used, which brings us to the immensely popular smart phones.

Smart phones can make your life easier and more enjoyable.  Text messaging and email keep us in touch.  But, is there a downside to all this constant connection?

Techworld reports that stress levels in smart phone users can become so pronounced that some people start experiencing “phantom vibrations” of non-existent text messages.

“University of Worcester Psychologist, Richard Balding, conducted psychometric tests on 100 employed and student volunteers, finding that those who checked their smart phones often were more likely to experience emotional stress.

“This was particularly true when the phones were being used in a work context, with users feeling pressure to check for messages in order to keep abreast of workflow.

“At its worst, as stress levels rose, workers would check their phones more often, creating a negative cycle in which a few even started believing that their phones were receiving alerts when no such alerts existed.”

With smart phones, the distinction between work and private time has all but disappeared.  For many people, there is no more leaving work, work is always wherever you go…  and so is the stress.

 

Stress May Cause Your Brain To SHRINK!!!

 

Think you have a big brain?  Well, if you are stressed out, it might be shrinking.     According to a January 13, 2012 article in the Baltimore Sun, A study by Yale University researchers found that stressful life events can reduce gray matter in regions of the brain that regulate emotion and important physiological functions in healthy people to brain structure changes associated with psychiatric disorders, such as addiction, depression and anxiety.

Past studies have only linked stress…

            “The researchers looked at MRIs of more than 100 healthy people. They found the changes soon after stressful events occurred and said the findings may serve as warning signals of future psychiatric disorders and chronic diseases, such as diabetes or hypertension.”

Do You Tebow?

What you don’t know about Tim Tebow’s private life may change your opinion of the popular and controversial Denver Bronco’s Quarterback.

 

It was projected to be the most watched football playoff game of all time.  Who knows if it actually was? (It really doesn’t matter.)

What matters is why such a prediction was made and who was responsible.

Even if you are not a football fan, you’ve probably heard the name Tim Tebow. If you are like most people, you either love him or hate him.  Well, maybe not hate… just a large amount of dislike.  There is no doubt he has been the center of controversy and media hype all season long.

Why?  Tim Tebow was a first round draft pick in the 2010 NFL draft.  He is the winner of two NCAA National Football Championships.  He was the first-ever sophomore to win the Heisman Trophy.  He was the winner of the Davey O’Brien Award as the nation’s top college football player.  He was the winner of the James E. Sullivan Award as the nation’s most outstanding amateur athlete in any sport.  This season, he brought the Denver Broncos to the playoffs in spectacular fashion by helping them win many last second games.

But, he is also the son of evangelical missionaries and he has openly displayed signs of his faith.  One example is called “Tebowing.”  This is when Tim drops to one knee after scoring, symbolic of thanking Jesus.

What many people may be missing has nothing to do with football.  Granted, winning football games can bring enjoyment to a lot of people’s lives.  But, what Tim Tebow does outside of football is much more important. With the money and fame from football, he will be able to do a whole heck of a lot more.

For example, it is easy to learn about Tebow’s well-documented empathy and humanitarian efforts.  On his official website (TimTebow.com), there’s a link to The Tim Tebow Foundation – Bringing faith, hope and love to those needing a brighter day in their darkest hour of need.

There is also the story of Zack McLeod.  Zack is a 20 year old former football player who suffered a traumatic brain injury at the age of 17 and was given only a 5% chance of surviving.  But, he did survive… and his dream was to meet Tim Tebow.  So, right before the most pressure-filled and important game of Tim’s life (the previously mentioned playoff game against the New England Patriots), Tebow took time out and spent it with Zack and made Zack’s dream come true.

In a USA Today article, Tim Tebow put it all in perspective:  “We’re playing a game, and you want to win, but you know that it’s not the end of the world,” Tebow says. “Even a bad loss on the football field is better than spending a day (recovering) in a hospital.”

How about this shockingly uncommon stance in today’s world when athletes openly say they don’t want to be role models:  “Tim believes there is more to life than football,” says foundation executive director, Erik Dellenback.  Tebow does not imbibe, display rivers of tattoo ink on his sculpted physique or hang out in nightclubs. Home-schooled on a 44-acre farm outside Jacksonville, he is serious about personal responsibility.

“The biggest reason I don’t (consume alcohol) is because (if I have) a glass of wine, I don’t want to be responsible for a kid looking up to me and saying, ‘Hey, Tebow’s doin’ it — I am going to do it.’ And then he makes a bad decision.  “Because, like it or not, it is serious,” he says. 

In the end, it’s not about Tim Tebow’s religion and whether you are the same faith as him or not.  Instead, it’s about what he does. So far, who can argue with that?

10 Good Uses For Salt

 

            It’s been used throughout human history, it’s mentioned in the Bible, it’s ubiquitous and it’s also cheap. Mined from salt rocks and extracted from sea water, salt is… well, the “salt of the earth.” You can’t healthily live without it. At the same time, you can’t live healthily with too much of it. Get the balance right – in your food and in your life – and salt is worth its own weight.

Here are 10 good uses for salt:  1. Deter ants… Sprinkle salt in doorways, on windowsills and anywhere else ants use to sneak into your house. It’s a sure way to keep them out!  2. Kill grass and weeds growing in cracks in your driveway…Tired of weeding your driveway? Sprinkle salt on the grass and pour very hot water over it. Not only is this a highly effective way to kill unwanted plants, it’s also eco-friendly and cheap.  3. Say goodbye to fleas…If your dogs have fleas, simply wash their doghouse and blankets in salt water. If you’re worried your dogs may have brought fleas into your house, simply sprinkle your carpets lightly with salt and then brush it in. Leave it for 12 hours and thoroughly vacuum.  4. Pick up a dropped egg…If you drop an egg on the kitchen floor, sprinkle salt on the mess and leave it there for 20 minutes. You’ll be able to wipe it right up.  5. Clean up oven spills quickly…If a pie or casserole bubbles over in the oven, pour a handful of salt on top of the spill. It won’t smoke, smell and, most importantly, will bake into a crust that makes the mess easier to clean once it’s cooled.  6. Clean brown spots off your iron…Simply sprinkle salt on a sheet of waxed paper, slide the iron across it and rub lightly with silver polish. Your iron will look like brand-new in no time.  7. Remove stains from your coffee pot…Fill it with 1/4 cup of table salt and a dozen ice cubes. Swish the mixture around and let it sit for half an hour.  Then, fill it with cold water and rinse. Your coffee pot will look brand new.  8. Keep your windshield frost-free…Dip a sponge into salt water and rub it on windows, and they won’t frost up… even when the mercury drops below zero.  9. Soothe a bee sting…Wet the sting right away and cover it with salt.  10. Stop a grease fire…Pouring salt on top of a grease fire will smother it – completely.

How To Beat Germs At Their Own Game!!!

 

Just in case you don’t know by now: STRESS IS A KILLER.  It used to be theorized that people got sick because germs invading the body were very strong… stronger than the immune system.  For example, it was believed that once you came in contact with the common cold, you would get sick.  Now, modern doctors know the strength of the invaders… or germs… is only part of the story and many believe that is not even the most important part.  On the contrary, another theory is that the body’s immune system (unless you are genetically compromised) is stronger than most – if not all – invaders.  Your body’s immune system will fight off these germs and not get sick unless… and this is a very big unless… there is something weakening your immune system that helps the invaders and germs win.  This can result from poor nutrition, lack of sleep, being over worked, etc.

One of the most common and detrimental things to weaken your immune system is STRESS!!! This is very important to understand because most people lead very stressful lives.  Stress at work, stress from lack of a job, not enough money, relationships, etc. all subtly weaken the immune system. Many researchers believe these common stresses… over years and years… can lead to major illnesses like heart disease, diabetes and more.  That’s why it is important to learn (and practice) ways to relieve stress in your everyday life.  There is no way to reduce ALL the stress in your life, so it is important to do what you can and learn to handle it in the best way possible.

Here are two great tips:  (1) Get away from the source of the stress.  This makes sense, but it is often easier said than done.  For example, if your main source of stress is your job, you probably can’t just quit.  But, it might be wise to start taking steps to make a change.  Just taking positive steps in the right direction can help relieve stress.  (2)  Take time each day to relax.  This is something anyone can do… because you only need about 10 minutes and you can be anywhere.  Some call it meditation, others just a little “me time.”  Whatever you call it, do it every day.  You can daydream, visualize good things or take a nap.  These 10 minutes a day can go a long way to relieve stress and help you live a more healthy life.
