Is There One Supplement You Should Take During the Colder Months?

Find out what recent research says about this supplement and why you might need it to stay as healthy as possible.

Also this month:

  • A common nutritional deficiency in athletes and how to correct it: Study shows adding this to your diet can decrease inflammation and pain while also increasing athletic performance.
  • Knee arthritis attacking much younger crowd: Knee arthritis and total knee replacement surgery was once thought to be a problem only for those age 55 and older. New research shows much younger people are at risk because of one very preventable issue.
  • FDA makes a statement on ingredient in processed foods: Find out what you are probably eating that the FDA said is not “generally recognized as safe” for use in food.
  • Concrete proof there are still wonderful people in the world: After reading this story, you must ask yourself, “Am I a good enough person to do this too?”

Houston – Is there one supplement you should take during the colder months?  Research shows there is a very good chance the answer to that question is YES, especially if you are an athlete or on a regular workout program.  Here is why…

Vitamin D is a fat soluble vitamin that is essential for good health.  The main function of Vitamin D is to regulate the absorption of calcium and phosphorus in our bones and aid in cell-to-cell communication throughout the body.  Vitamin D is unique from other essential vitamins because humans can produce it through exposure to sunlight.

If you get enough exposure to sunlight, you will have plenty of Vitamin D so you can probably already see where this article is headed…

The first problem with all this is, due to the fear of skin cancer, even in the summer months, many people do not get adequate sun exposure for their bodies to produce enough Vitamin D.

In winter, it is simply a fact that there is a lot less sunlight.  If you live in higher latitudes, chances are you are not going to get enough sun exposure during the colder months to produce sufficient levels of Vitamin D.

In fact, a study recently published in the International Journal of Sports Nutrition and Exercise Metabolism stated: “A high prevalence of Vitamin D insufficiency/deficiency, which may impact on health and training ability, is evident among athletes worldwide.”

The study investigated the Vitamin D status of elite Irish boxers and recorded the effect of Vitamin D supplementation. A group of boxers were supplemented during the winter months with 5,000 IU Vitamin D3 for 10-12 weeks. The result was that this supplementation significantly increased blood levels of Vitamin D and corrected any insufficiencies/ deficiencies in these athletes.  Three out of four boxers who did not receive the supplementation were Vitamin D insufficient/ deficient after winter, and 35% were insufficient/ deficient at the beginning of the study (which was before the winter months).

The study’s conclusion: “This study has highlighted a high prevalence of Vitamin D insufficiency/deficiency among elite Irish athletes and demonstrated that wintertime Vitamin D3 supplementation is an appropriate regimen to ensure Vitamin D sufficiency in athletes during winter and early spring.”

Another study in the British Journal of Sports Medicine (Nov. 2013) tested their own group of elite athletes and found similar results that support the same conclusion.

Here is a quick aside if you are an athlete…  A study published in the journal Cytokine (July 2013) found that Vitamin D plays a pivotal role in exercise induced muscle damage and inflammation in rats.  Obviously, rats are not humans, and more studies need to be done but having your levels of Vitamin D in the appropriate range is really looking like a great idea.

According to The Endocrine Society’s guidelines published in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism (July 2011): “Considering that Vitamin D deficiency is very common in all age groups and that few foods contain Vitamin D, the Task Force recommended supplementation at suggested daily intake and tolerable upper limit levels, depending on age and clinical circumstances.”

Because everyone is individual, this newsletter will not give any recommendation as to anyone’s personal Vitamin D needs.  The best thing to do is discuss this with a health care provider who is knowledgeable on this subject.

FDA Moving To Ban Popular

Ingredient In “Junk” Food

In a press release dated November 7, 2013, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) “announced its preliminary determination that partially hydrogenated oils (PHOs), the primary dietary source of artificial trans fat in processed foods, are not ‘generally recognized as safe’ for use in food.  The FDA’s preliminary determination is based on available scientific evidence and the findings of expert scientific panels.”

It looks like artificial trans fats will be banned, and manufacturers will be forced to reformulate the products that contain them.

Trans fats are made by adding hydrogen to vegetable oils.  The hydrogenation of oils increases their shelf life, but it is also wonderful at clogging arteries.  This was originally done so food would not spoil, but storage conditions have vastly improved and these trans fats are no longer needed.

According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, reducing trans fat consumption by avoiding artificial trans fats could prevent 10,000 – 20,000 heart attacks and 3,000 – 7,000 coronary heart disease deaths each year in the United States.

It’s been well documented that artificial trans fats can do very bad things to the body and are strongly linked to poor lipid levels and poor cardiovascular outcomes.

Trans fatty acids have similar properties as saturated fats in that they both increase LDL “bad” cholesterol if consumed in excessive quantities.  High LDL has been associated with increased risk for cardiovascular disease.

The Irony

There is quite a bit of irony here.  Not too long ago, margarine was considered a healthy alternative to butter.  Countless people made the switch thinking they were improving their health.  As it turns out, margarine is loaded with artificial trans fats.  Most brands contain between 1.5 – 3 grams per serving.

The bottom line is, try to eat as natural as you can.  If it is artificial, chances are it is not your best choice.

Are You A Good Enough Person To Do This?

Here is proof that there are still amazing people in the world.  Are you one of them?

Every day, it feels like all the news covers is the dark, horrible side of humanity.

Sure, people do bad things, even evil things.  But, there is another side to this story.  There’s a clear argument that can be made that many more people are good than bad.  For every one bad person in the news (or going viral on the internet) there are hundreds, thousands, or millions who did not do anything wrong.  In fact, many, if not most, probably did quite a bit of good.

So, why don’t we hear about all this good?  Quite frankly, it’s because bad stuff sells.  It sells much more than good news.  People love drama.  It’s no coincidence Honey Boo Boo, The Kardashians, and The Jersey Shore were/are monstrously successful shows.

That’s why I bet you have probably heard of those shows but have not heard about this…

Rabbi Noah Muroff lives in New Haven, Connecticut and bought a desk off Craig’s List for $200.  So far, that’s nothing shocking… but it gets better…

When he got the desk home, he couldn’t get it into his office in one piece.  So, Rabbi Noah took the desk apart and pulled out the drawers.

Behind one of the drawers, he found a plastic bag.  At first glance, Muroff saw what he thought to be a $100 bill.

When he opened the bag, he discovered there were quite a few $100 bills.  In fact, there was $98,000 in cash.  That’s ninety-eight THOUSAND dollars in CASH.

WOW!  So let me ask you a question… What is the first thing you would do with that money after you stopped jumping around cheering? Pay off some bills?  Buy a car?  Go on vacation?  Give some to charity?

Muroff did none of that.  Instead, he did the right thing.  He called the person he just bought the desk from and told them what he had found.

As it turned out, the desk’s previous owner had hidden her inheritance money in the desk and had forgotten all about it.

Muroff returned the money.  All of it.  He is quoted as simply saying, “The most important thing in life is to be honest.”

That’s it.  There was no police chase.  No drugs or violence.  No one yelling and screaming.  Just an ethical and moral person choosing to do the right thing and not making a big deal about it or even looking for public approval or praise.

The comments posted on this story were varied.  Some praised him and said they would do the same thing.  Others said he was a fool and they would have spent the money.  Some said it is all just a matter of the amount and that we all have a price.  If that was $10 million… or $1 billion… that he would have kept it.

So, the question for you is, what would YOU do?  Let’s say it was $10 million and no one else knew.  It was your secret.  Do ethics and morality really have a price?

Do YOU have a price?

Did You Know?…

7-UP Used to Include Psychiatric Medication?

The lemon-lime flavored soda 7-UP was created by Charles Grigg of the Howdy Corporation in 1929 and first launched two weeks before the 1929 stock market crash.  It was originally named “Bib-Label Lithiated Lemon-Lime Soda” and included lithium citrate in its formula.  Lithium citrate is a mood-stabilizing drug that was popular in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and it is still used today for people with bipolar disorder, among others.  Obviously, such a lengthy name wasn’t ideal on the consumer side of things, so the beverage’s name was quickly shortened to “7-UP Lithiated Lemon Soda”, then chopped to just “7-UP” in 1936.  The lithium citrate, surprisingly, stuck around in the drink all the way until 1950 when new research showed it had potentially dangerous side effects.

Tip Of The Month

Why Knee Arthritis is Attacking People Under 55 Years Old and

What You Can Do to Possibly Prevent a Total Knee Replacement!

The statistics are staggering.  Osteoarthritis is the leading cause of disability in the United States.  According to research on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website, nearly 1 in 2 people may develop symptomatic knee arthritis by age 85.  According to data collected from 1999 – 2003,  two in three people who are obese may develop symptomatic knee osteoarthritis during their lifetime.  Two-thirds of adults with doctor-diagnosed arthritis are overweight or obese.  But that is only the beginning…

New research from the University of Massachusetts Medical School shows an alarming increase in the rate of knee replacements linked to obesity among the young.  According to the study: “Contrary to popular myth, it is not the aging Baby Boomer or weekend warrior that is causing the unprecedented increase in knee replacement surgeries.  Data gathered by more than 125 orthopedic surgeons from 22 states across the United States show a more mundane culprit:  rising rates of obesity among those under the age of 65.”  Total joint replacement surgery is not only one of the most expensive procedures in the country, it is one of the most often performed.  The study tracked 9,000 people and 55% of the subjects under age 65 were considered obese, as compared to 43% of those subjects over 65 years old.

Here’s something more shocking:  More than twice as many of the younger (under 65) participants were morbidly obese.  The actual statistics were 5% of participants over 65 and 11% under 65 were morbidly obese.  Morbidly obese is considered having a body mass index greater than 40.  The under 65 group also had higher rates of smoking and lower mental health scores.  Researchers add that the rise in obesity among younger people is “having a dramatic influence on the number of total joint replacement surgeries.”  According to the study, “Knee replacement surgeries are already one of the most common procedures in the United States.  Approximately 600,000 are performed each year at a cost of $9.9 billion, and the demand is expected to grow to 3.48 million procedures a year by 2030.”

What’s amazing to consider is research has shown a weight loss of as little as 11 pounds (~ 5 kg) reduces the risk of developing knee osteoarthritis in women by 50% and for every one pound (~ .5kg) of weight loss, it removes four pounds (~ 1.8 kg) of joint stress in people with knee arthritis.  Experts say that the accumulated reduction in knee load for a pound loss in weight would be more than 4,800 pounds per mile (~2,177 kg/1.6 km) walked.  Clearly, one of the best things you can do for, not only your knees but all your weight bearing joints and overall health, is to maintain a healthy weight.  Treating knee arthritis while being overweight seems to be a losing battle.  Even though technology is better than it has ever been, no one wants a total knee replacement if it can be avoided.

Mental Attitude: A Later Life Crisis? 32% of males and 33% of females ages 60-69 have experienced a so-called

“later life crisis”. The most common stimuli for these episodes were bereavement, sickness, injury to themselves or

to others, and caring for a sick or disabled loved one. The stressful life event can make the individual aware of their

own frailty and death. Some people react with resilience and set new goals, while others focus more on the present,

trying to enjoy life more than they did before. British Psychological Society, April 2013

Health Alert: Hip/Knee Replacement? Joint damage from osteoarthritis is responsible for 80% of hip replacements

and 90% of knee surgeries. Only 50% of individuals with arthritis who had a hip or knee replacement reported a

significant improvement in pain and mobility after surgery. 25% of patients who get a single joint replacement will

have another within two years. Arthritis & Rheumatism, April 2013

Diet: Unleaded Please! Levels of lead in rice imported into the United States (US) ranged from 6-12 mg/kg. For

adults, the daily exposure levels from eating imported rice are 20-40 times higher than the Food and Drug

Administration’s accepted levels. For infants and children, the daily exposure levels are 30-60 times higher. Lead is a

neurotoxin that can damage the brain, and in young children whose brains are still growing, it can seriously diminish

their capacity to learn and develop. It can disrupt children’s behavior, such as make them more aggressive,

impulsive, and hyperactive. Lead increases blood pressure and causes cardiovascular diseases in adults.

American Chemical Society, April 2013

Exercise: Walking vs. Running. Brisk walking can reduce a person’s risk of diabetes, high blood pressure, and high

cholesterol just as much as running can. The risk for first-time hypertension was notably reduced 4.2% by running

and 7.2% by walking. The risk for first-time high cholesterol was reduced 4.3% by running and 7% by walking. The

risk for first-time diabetes was lowered 12.1% by running and 12.3% by walking. The risk for coronary heart disease

was lowered 4.5% by running and 9.3% by walking. Arteriosclerosis, Thrombosis and Vascular Biology, April 2013

Chiropractic: Lowering Blood Pressure. Chiropractic adjustments to the upper neck were shown to lower high

blood pressure. Researchers found a 14 mm Hg greater drop in systolic blood pressure, and 8 mm Hg greater drop in

diastolic blood pressure following a cervical adjustment. This effect was greater than would result from two blood

pressure medications given in combination, and it was adverse-event free.

Journal of Human Hypertension, March 2007

Wellness/Prevention: Vitamin D. A hormone produced in the skin with exposure to sunlight, Vitamin D is also

found in fish, fish liver oils, and egg yolks. Muscle function and recovery from fatigue has been shown to improve

with Vitamin D supplementation, which is thought to enhance the activity of the mitochondria – the power plants of

the cell. Newcastle University, April 2013

WEEKLY HEALTH NEWS UPDATE

Week of Monday, March 25th, 2013

Mental Attitude: Happiness and Age? Psychological well-being is linked to important life outcomes such as career success, relationship satisfaction, and health. Well-being tends to increase with age; however, when you were born can have a lasting impact on your overall sense of well-being. For example, people who grew up during the Great Depression started off with lower levels of overall well-being than their children who grew up during more prosperous times. As they aged, their overall sense of well-being increased but stayed below the following generation’s levels at similar ages. Based on this data, researchers warn that people growing up in today’s more challenging economic environment may experience similar long-lasting effects to their overall sense of well-being. Psychological Science, February 2013

Health Alert: Alcohol On The Brain? Excessive alcohol use accounts for 4% of the global burden of disease, and binge drinking is a growing health issue. Functional signs of brain damage from alcohol misuse in young people include deficits in visual learning, memory, and executive functions. Structural signs of alcohol misuse in young people include shrinking of the brain and significant changes to white matter tracts.

Cortex, February 2013

Diet: Obesity Causes Vitamin D Deficiency? Researchers have observed a 4.2% drop in Vitamin D levels for each 10% increase in BMI. Vitamin D is important because it aids bone health and decreases risk of cancer, diabetes, high blood pressure, heart attack, and early death. PLoS Medicine, February 2013

Exercise: Reduce Risk of Dementia. People who exercise and have higher physical fitness levels during middle age have a significantly reduced risk of developing dementia later in life.

Annals of Internal Medicine, February 2013

Chiropractic: Osteoarthritis and Injuries From Early Adulthood. Young adults who had injuries to the knee and/or hip were 3x-5x as likely to suffer from osteoarthritis in the knee and/or hip later in life than young adults who suffered no such injuries. Annals of Internal Medicine, September 2000

Wellness/Prevention: Osteoporosis Risk. Risk factors for osteoporosis include: inadequate dietary calcium intake, vitamin D deficiency, lack of regular weight-bearing exercise, cigarette smoking, and excessive alcohol consumption. Medical Journal of Australia, February 2013

Research: Does Green Tea Decrease Risk Of Cancer?

More this month:

  • Osteoarthritis of the knee – Should you really be moving it?
  • Current research shows 33% of Americans are deficient in Vitamin D. How much do you need?
  • Want to add 4.5 years to your life? New study says this is how to do it.
  • Can obesity really turn body fat TOXIC?
  • Research shows doing this lowered coronary heart disease risk by 20%.

Inspirational Story: Down But Not Out – Super Storm Sandy Destroyed Many Things, But Not The Human Spirit.

Houston – There’s so much to tell you and so little time.  What do you want to hear about first, green tea decreasing risk of cancer or easing knee arthritis pain?

Let’s flip a coin.  Heads… green tea.  Tails… knee arthritis.

Tails!  Knee Arthritis It Is!

Knee arthritis is not only common, it can be life-changing.  Studies show that nearly 1 in 2 people may develop symptomatic knee osteoarthritis by age 85.

What Is Osteoarthritis Of The Knee?

Osteoarthritis or “OA” is the most common form of arthritis.   OA is a condition where the cartilage between joints wears away, causing pain.

Then, when enough synovial fluid (a naturally occurring lubricant found in the knee) and cartilage is gone, the pain can be unbearable and require total knee replacement.

If You Have Knee Arthritis,

Is There Anything You Can Do About It?

According to researcher, Dr. Tatyana Shamliyan, “Several guidelines recommend non-drug treatment, including exercise, electrical stimulation, tai chi and esthetics.” Her team analyzed the evidence and came up with results that were sometimes at odds with those guidelines.  They looked at how the therapies affected pain, functioning, and disability. “Based on the analysis, we can’t conclude sustained benefit with tai chi, manual therapy or massage, or transcutaneous electrical [nerve] stimulation.”

Dr. Shamliyan’s team reviewed nearly 200 studies and found there was evidence that low impact aerobic exercise and water exercise improved function and decreased disability. Aerobic exercise, strength training and therapeutic ultrasound reduced pain and increased mobility. However, the best outcomes came when patients stuck to their exercise program. This is particularly important as exercise can increase knee pain in the short-term.

It should be noted that the study did not show that intense exercise was any better than moderate exercise.

The take home message here is that it looks like certain moderate exercise can help some of the symptoms associated with knee OA.

But this does not mean you should take it upon yourself to “just go exercise.”

If you suffer with knee OA, you should see a qualified physician.  They will be able to determine the best treatment program for your individual case.

Now For Some Green Tea

A study recently published in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition investigated the association of regular tea intake (greater than 3 times per week for greater than 6 months) with risk of digestive system cancers.

The study was based on middle-aged and older Chinese women.

Results: Women who consumed ≥150g tea/mo (2–3 cups/day) had a 21% reduced risk of digestive system cancers.  The association was found primarily for colorectal and stomach/esophageal cancers.

Want To Add 4.5 Years To Your Life?

A recent study published in the medical journal PLoS One pooled self-reported data on leisure time physical activities and Body Mass Index (BMI) scores from nearly 650,000 individuals over 40 years old. Their goal was to calculate the gain in life expectancy associated with specific levels of physical activity.

A physical activity level equivalent to brisk walking for up to 75 minutes per week was associated with a gain of 1.8 years in life expectancy relative to no leisure time activity.

Even better, having a physical activity level at or above 150 minutes of brisk walking per week was associated with an overall gain of life expectancy of 3.4 – 4.5 years.

In another study, 150 minutes/week of moderate intensity leisure-time physical activity led to a 14% lower coronary heart disease risk compared with those reporting no leisure-time physical activity. Those engaging in the equivalent of 300 minutes per week of moderate-intensity leisure-time physical activity had a 20% lower risk.

What does this mean?  Basically, it’s what we have known for quite some time.  Moderate exercise is good and it can, most likely, extend your life.

But, what’s really important is you do not have to go crazy.  Go for a brisk walk several times per week, or every day if you can, and you should see some healthy results.

Obesity Triggers

Inflammation In Fat Cells

New research says that obesity can trigger inflammation in the fat cells found just under the skin.  This is very bad because inflammation is believed to be linked to both diabetes and heart disease.

In a related study, researchers found no inflammation in the fat of lean individuals while 70% of obese people in the study showed evidence of inflammation-promoting fat and impaired blood vessel function.

No matter what, if you are obese, the odds are against you.  Losing even small amounts of weight can make a big difference in your overall health.

Down But Not Out

Super Storm Sandy Destroyed Many Things, But Not The Human Spirit.

This Wonderful Story Is Proof…

Super Storm Sandy is said to be the largest hurricane on record at over 1,000 miles wide. The highest wind gusts (94 mph) were recorded in Eatons Neck, New York.  33 inches of snow piled up in Clayton, West Virginia. Waves were 39.67 feet 500 miles southeast of Atlantic City, New Jersey… 32.5 feet just outside New York Harbor entrance and 21.7 feet in lower Lake Michigan.

The devastation was unimaginable.  Homes were destroyed, the power was out for an estimated 7.4 million people, and over 110 people were killed in the storm.

There was and still is plenty to curse about that storm, but there are also some amazing stories, stories that show the good in people and how we come together in a time of need.

Here is one of the most amazing stories from Super Storm Sandy…

As the story goes, Christine is a homeowner in Toms River, New Jersey.  She evacuated her home before Sandy hit.  When she returned to her home, she found a note.  The note had evidently been left by someone who had broken into her home during the storm while he was trying to survive.

The person “stole” a blanket and jacket to try to keep from freezing to death.  The person who broke into Christine’s house was a 28 year old New Jersey man named Mike.  The note was basically Mike’s last words and request to contact his father and let him know he had died.

Here’s what the note said: “Whoever reads this I’m DIEING – I’m 28 yrs. old my name is Mike. I had to break into your house. I took blankets off the couch. I have hypothermia. I didn’t take anything. A wave thru me out of my house down the block. I don’t think I’m going to make it. The water outside is 10ft deep at least. There’s no res[c]ue. Tell my dad I love him and I tryed get[t]ing out. His number is ###-###-#### his name is Tony. I hope u can read this I’m in the dark. I took a black jacket too. Goodbye. God all mighty help me.”

A picture of the note spread like wildfire over Facebook and Twitter.  Then, it was seen by radio talk show host, Justin Louis. Justin called the number in the note and someone answered.

The person who answered the phone was Tony.  Justin told Tony about the note and Tony said that Mike is his son.  Then, Tony asked if Justin wanted to talk to Mike.

Yes, Mike had survived! Justin interviewed Mike, and Mike told him how he had been swept out to sea for hours.  His house was flooding and when he walked out the door, he was literally swept away into the bay.

Mike couldn’t make it back to his house because the current was too strong.  He spent 5 hours battling the current and waves until ending up at Christine’s house where he grabbed some clothes and wrote the note.  He was at Christine’s house for 2 hours before he was picked up by a man named Frank on a Waverunner.  Frank rescued Mike and brought him to his house.

Now, Mike says he is afraid of the dark because of all that time he spent in the bay with 20 foot waves crashing over him,  but that’s a lot better than the alternative.

Tip Of The Month

Vitamin D

For most people, Vitamin D levels drop considerably in the winter (or summer if you live in the Southern Hemisphere).  Vitamin D is very important for both muscle tone and health, and recent research suggests it’s important for the immune system.  Obviously, the winter is an important time to keep your immune system as strong as possible so you can fight off the common cold and the dreaded flu.  Now, some new research shows how much Vitamin D the average person needs to maintain optimal levels. According to the recommended levels in this new research, it is believed that 30-50% of Americans and Canadians are deficient.  In order to raise your Vitamin D levels into the optimum range throughout the year, the Endocrine Society has recommended the following daily intake levels of Vitamin D (from all sources):  Children under one years old: 400-1,000 IU/day; Children 1 to 18 years old: 600-1,000 IU/day; Adults: 1,500-2,000 IU/day.

Is All Vitamin D Created Equal?

Research published in the June edition of the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition has shown that Vitamin D3 supplements could provide more benefit than its close relative, Vitamin D2.  This is important because it is difficult for most people to get enough Vitamin D through food and sunshine, especially during the winter months.  Many foods are fortified with Vitamin D, but it is usually in the Vitamin D2 form.  The research shows that Vitamin D3 is better at raising the Vitamin D levels in your blood when given as a supplement. Dr. Laura Tripkovic explains: “We know that Vitamin D is vital in helping to keep us fit and healthy, but what has not been clear is the difference between the two types of Vitamin D. It used to be thought that both were equally beneficial, however our analysis highlights that our bodies may react differently to both types and that Vitamin D3 could actually be better for us.”

To get their results, researchers analyzed the results of 10 studies with a total of over 1,000 people.  They stated, “Vitamin D3 could potentially become the preferred choice for supplementation. However, additional research is required to examine the metabolic pathways involved in oral and intramuscular administration of Vitamin D and the effects across age, sex, and ethnicity, which this review was unable to verify.”

Is Vitamin D Really That Important?

According to the National Institute of Health: “A growing body of research suggests that Vitamin D might play some role in the prevention and treatment of type 1 and type 2 diabetes, hypertension, glucose intolerance, multiple sclerosis, and other medical conditions. Laboratory and animal evidence, as well as epidemiologic data, suggests that Vitamin D status could affect cancer risk. Strong biological and mechanistic bases indicate that Vitamin D plays a role in the prevention of colon, prostate, and breast cancers.”

Mental Attitude: Reaction To Stress. How people react to stress determines how that stress will affect their health.  Study volunteers were separated in two groups: 1) those who let their troubles affect their emotional state and 2) those who didn’t let stress bother them at all. At a 10-year follow up, those who let stress affect them (group 1) were more likely to suffer from chronic health problems. Penn State, November 2012

Health Alert: Hip Replacement and Stroke Risk. Hemorrhagic stroke and ischemic stroke risk is ~4% higher within 2 weeks of total hip replacement surgery. A hemorrhagic stroke is brought on by bleeding in the brain, while an ischemic stroke is brought on by arterial blockage. Total hip replacement is extremely common in the United States. Around 1 million hip replacement surgeries are done around the world every year, 300,000 in the United States alone. Stroke, November 2012

Diet: Vitamin D Levels Decreasing? Women with health issues such as arthritis, hypothyroidism, cancer, high blood pressure, and osteoporosis are much more likely to have inadequate levels of vitamin D during seasons with decreased daylight. 28% of women had deficient levels and 33% had insufficient levels of vitamin D. Women taking supplements were able to significantly elevate their vitamin D levels.

American Society for Clinical Pathology, November 2012

Exercise: Exercise When You’re Sick? The choice to exercise or not sometimes depends on the sickness or disease. Our bodies work harder and use more energy when we are fighting an illness. If symptoms are above the neck (sore throat, runny nose), it is probably okay to exercise. If you’re sick but still want to exercise, simply reduce your intensity and duration. You should not exercise if you have body aches, fever, diarrhea or vomiting, shortness of breath or chest congestion, dizziness or light-headedness. When resuming your regular exercise routine, try starting with 50% effort and 50% duration.

Loyola University Health System, November 2012

Chiropractic: Complexity of The Brain. How complex is the brain? One cubic inch of brain cortex contains over 10,000 miles of connecting tissue. Guyton’s Physiology

Wellness/Prevention: Staying Healthy!  “The preservation of health is easier than the cure for disease.”

WEEKLY HEALTH NEWS UPDATE

Week of Monday, April 9th, 2012

Mental Attitude: The Brain, Aggression & The Media. Research over the past few decades has shown that viewing physical violence in the media can increase aggression in adults and children. A new study has also found that onscreen relational aggression (including social exclusion, gossip and emotional bullying) may prime the brain for aggression. Aggressive Behavior, March 2012

Health Alert: Don’t Be Like A Brit? Britons are dying early because of ignorance and denial of cancer symptoms. If Britain matched the best cancer survival rates in Europe, 11,500 fewer people would die every year. Matching just the European average would save 6,000-7,000 lives every year. Britain’s poor record in early diagnosis is to blame. A survey asked Britons about warning signs and symptoms of cancer. 75% failed to mention pain, coughing, bladder and bowel problems; 66% failed to list bleeding; and only 25% mentioned weight loss or mole changes. 37% who spotted early signs of cancer said they may delay getting checked because they worried about the result. 37% said they may delay getting symptoms checked because it would be difficult to make an appointment to see their GP. 25% said it might be a waste of their doctor’s time. Cancer Research, 2012

Diet: Added Sugar, Obesity And Diabetes. Fructose intake from added sugar is linked with the epidemic rise in obesity, metabolic syndrome and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. Metabolic syndrome is a group of risk factors that raises a person’s risk for diabetes, heart disease, stroke, and other health problems. Metabolic syndrome currently affects 25% of Americans. If you compared two diets of similar calorie intake (more fructose vs. more starch), the higher fructose diet will lead to greater accumulation of fat around organs and higher insulin resistance.

Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, March 2012

Exercise: Take A Break From Sitting. Interrupting prolonged periods of sitting with regular, two-minute breaks of light or moderate intensity activity, like walking, may be good for overweight and obese people’s health. Such activity helps their bodies keep glucose and insulin levels under control after consuming a high calorie meal.

Diabetes Care, March 2012

Chiropractic: Tennis Anyone? “A Chiropractor was instrumental in putting my body back together…alternative therapies will play a bigger role in our lives. After all, people like what works”

~ Martina Navratilova – former WTA World No. 1 and 9x Wimbledon Singles Champion

Wellness/Prevention: Vitamin D And Fractures. Vitamin D intake can lower stress fracture risk in girls, especially in regards to injuries caused by high impact activities. There was no evidence that calcium and dairy intakes were protective against developing a stress fracture or that soda intake was predictive of an increased risk of stress fracture or confounded the association between dairy, calcium or vitamin D intakes and fracture risk.

Archives of Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine, March 2012

“In general, mankind, since improvement of cookery, eats twice as much as nature requires.” ~  Ben Franklin

Can This Vitamin Cut Your Risk Of The Flu By 42%?

The best part is – you do not even have to take

this vitamin to get the benefits!  Find out how…

Read on the discover:

  • NTSB recommends full ban on cell phone use while driving.
  • The danger lurking in raw cookie dough!!!
  • 65 Pound Pit Bull Becomes Guardian Angel: The amazing story how a lost pit bull stopped a robbery and saved a mother and her 2-year-old child being held at knifepoint.  Move over Benji and Lassie, there is a new Sheriff in town!!!

Houston – There is no doubt about it, getting the common cold is no fun.  But, coming down with the flu can be a real nightmare!  No one wants to miss work or school and have to deal with a fever, chills, headaches, body aches and just plain misery for a week or so (or even longer if you do not take care of yourself).

Here’s something very important most people do not understand: It is must easier to PREVENT the flu (or any sickness or disease) than it is to treat it.

You’ve heard the quote:

“An ounce of prevention is

worth a pound of cure.”

But, for most people, it’s nothing more than lip service. It’s just human nature.  When you are sick and you feel terrible, you say you are never going to let “this” happen again.  You are going to eat right, exercise, etc.  But, as soon as you feel like you’re back to your old self, you start acting like your “old self.” Don’t feel bad… just about everyone does it that way… except for the people who almost never get sick. J

Let’s face it, ALWAYS eating right, getting proper rest, reducing stress and so on in today’s society is nearly impossible.  That’s why you should always make the effort to do your best and to find small, but powerful, things that can help you in a big way.

For a while, some medical experts have ranted and raved about Vitamin D and its positive effects on health… and more and more research is being published that makes it look like they’re right.

For example, Dr. Joseph Mercola writes, “According to the findings from a 2010 study that didn’t get any widespread attention, vitamin D is a highly effective way to avoid influenza.

“In fact, children taking low doses of Vitamin D3 were shown to be 42 percent less likely to come down with the flu.

“The randomized, double blind, placebo-controlled study included 430 children aged 6-15, who were followed between December 2008 and March 2009.

“Half were given 1,200 IU’s of vitamin D3 daily, while the other half received a placebo.

“Influenza strains were determined through lab testing of nose and throat swabs.

“Eighteen of the children taking vitamin D contracted influenza Type A, compared to 31 children in the placebo group.

“Type B influenza rates were unaffected by vitamin D use, however, the illness resulting from Type B influenza strains is typically milder than Type A.

“Considering the fact that influenza was reduced by 42 percent at a dose of just 1,200 IU’s a day, it’s possible that even better results might be obtained with higher dosages—depending on just how deficient you are to begin with, of course, because it’s not really the dosage that matters; it’s the amount of vitamin D in your blood.”

One huge thing to understand here is that the study isn’t just referring to “Vitamin D,” it’s referring to Vitamin D(3).  So, if you are going to take a Vitamin D supplement, it should be for Vitamin D(3)… and it is always recommended you consult with a qualified physician who is an expert on nutrition and up on current research.  A lot has recently changed about what researches and scientist know about nutrition, not to mention what was taught in school 10 or 20 years ago!

But, here’s something else that is important and often very misunderstood: The best possible source of Vitamin D does not come in the form of a dietary supplement.  The best source is the SUN.

Wait, isn’t sun exposure bad?  Doesn’t it cause skin cancer?

The first thing to understand is that “sun exposure” is not bad.  Too much sun exposure is bad.  Water is not bad for you but drinking too much water can kill you.  Simply because drinking too much is bad for you does not mean you should not drink any.

The same is true for the sun.  Everyone is different but everyone needs the proper amount of sun to maximize their health potential.  You should get regular amounts of sunlight but NEVER enough to burn you.

Since skin types vary, as does the sun’s strength in different geographic locations, there is no “formula” to follow.  Once again, seeking advice from a physician well educated on this subject is a must.  Getting no sun is not good, but you don’t want to get too much, either.

National Transportation Safety Board

(NTSB) Recommends Banning

All Use Of Cell Phones While Driving

“This (distracted driving) is becoming the new DUI.  It’s becoming epidemic,” said NTSB member Robert Sumwalt.

An estimated 3,092 roadway fatalities last year involved distracted drivers but experts think the true number is probably higher because many distracted drivers either do not admit it or are killed in the crash.

35 states ban text messaging while driving, 30 ban cell-phone use by novice drivers and 10 ban all use of hand-held cell phones.

The safety board recommends development of phones smart enough to know when you are driving to discourage use.

Their new proposed ban would go above and beyond what states are currently doing in an effort to regulate cell phone usage.

According to CNN, “The recommendation is the most far-reaching yet by the National Transportation Safety Board, which in the past 10 years has increasingly sought to limit the use of portable electronic devices — recommending bans for novice drivers, school bus drivers and commercial truckers.           “Tuesday’s recommendation, if adopted by states, would outlaw non-emergency phone calls and texting by operators of every vehicle on the road.

“It would apply to hands-free as well as hand-held devices, but devices installed in the vehicle by the manufacturer would be allowed.”

Although safety is extremely important, one panelist discussing the issue wondered when the ban on playing with the car radio or children acting up in the back seat was going to come.

Inspirational Story Of The Month –

(Names And Details Have Been Changed To Protect Privacy)

65 Pound Pit Bull Becomes Guardian Angel:

Stops Robbery And Saves Mother And

2-Year Old Child Being Held At Knife Point!!!

It had been a good day.  “Angela” and her 2-year old son were leaving a playground in Port Charlotte, Florida.  That’s when a man cut her off in the parking lot.  He was holding a knife and told her not to make any sudden movements.  Angela didn’t know what to do.  She was physically at the mercy of her attacker and paralyzed with fear about what might happen to her little son.

That’s when it happened…  A guardian angel, in the form of a 65 pound pit bull, emerged from nowhere.  The super-hero dog charged the attacker and chased him off.

“I don’t think the dog physically attacked the man, but he went at him and was showing signs of aggression, just baring his teeth and growling and barking. It was clear he was trying to defend this woman,” Animal Control Lt. Brian Jones told Pet Pulse. “I don’t know what this man’s intentions were, but it is very possible this dog saved her life.”

The exceptional part of the story, Jones said, is that the dog had never met or even seen the people it so quickly jumped to defend.

“You hear about family dogs protecting their owners, but this dog had nothing to do with this woman or her kid,” Jones said. “He was like her guardian angel.”

As soon as the attacker ran off, Angela quickly put her son in their car.  The next thing she knew, the 65 pound pit bull was sitting in the back seat with her son, Jordan.  The dog looked like he was smiling.

Police believe the dog is probably not a stray, but rather, a lost pet because he is so well behaved.  So, the hero of the day was brought to a shelter with the hope his owner would find him.  But, Angela said if no one claims him after 5 days, she will adopt him.  She has already named him “Angel.”

“It’s funny, that someone’s irresponsibility could have saved someone’s life,” Jones said of Angel’s possible owners.

“I don’t know what his (the thief’s) intentions were — I don’t know why he did it, but I’m glad that — we call him Angel — I’m glad that Angel showed up because I don’t know what would have happened,” she added.

Pit bulls are banned in England, Denver, Colorado and Miami-Dade County in Florida.  If Angela had gotten attacked in a different part of Florida, Angel would have been “illegal” and most likely put to sleep.

ONE MORE SUPER HERO STORY – THIS ONE IS HUMAN!!!

When Lori Stearnes bought her grandchildren’s Christmas gifts on Kmart’s layaway plan, she had no idea she was about to discover the true meaning of the holidays.  You see, after she received her paycheck and went to pay her bill, she found out an anonymous donor had already done it for her.

“It just gives you a warm feeling,” said Stearnes, 53, of Omaha. “With all the things going on the world, just to have someone do that is so, I don’t know, it’s hard to put into words.”

At Kmart stores across the country, Santa got a little help this past holiday season… Anonymous donors paid off strangers’ layaway accounts and bought the Christmas gifts other families couldn’t afford, especially toys and children’s clothes set aside by impoverished parents.  Stearnes took her paycheck and paid someone else’s bill, just as others did all over the country.

We love helping our patients and their friends and relatives through their tough times and getting them feeling better!  We are here to help you stay feeling better and looking younger!  Don’t be a stranger.  You really can afford Chiropractic care! Don’t wait until you can no longer move!

Did You Know?…

Did you know that stress can lead to depression, weight gain and obesity, major health problems and over the long term, can even shorten your life? Well, now researchers at Tufts University think they might have the answer for stress relief in the form of a pill.  The researchers say they have discovered exactly how stress hormones affect receptors in your brain and they have actually been able to block them.

According to the author of the study, Jamie Maguire, PhD., “By blocking the synthesis of the neurosteroids, they stopped the elevation of corticosterone, and prevented anxiety in mice. We have identified a novel mechanism regulating the body’s response to stress by determining that neurosteroids are required to mount the physiological response to stress. Moreover, we were able to completely block the physiological response to stress, as well as prevent stress-induced anxiety.

“Now, the team is focusing on modulating the neuroreceptors to treat some of the diseases that accompany stress — be they depression, anxiety, or epilepsy.”

Words of Wisdom:  We all know stress is bad.  We all know that all drugs have side effects.  There are plenty of stress reduction techniques that do not require a drug, they just take a little effort.  (But, it is wonderful that science recognizes the importance of stress reduction.)

Tip Of The Month

STOP!!!!!  DANGER!!!  Don’t Eat That Raw Cookie Dough!!!

We all do it.  Just before you put the cookies in the oven, you take a little sample.  Most mothers tell their children to keep their hands out of the cookie dough because it will give them a tummy ache. Well, as it turns out, it can give them something much worse.  Scientists now warn that raw cookie dough can carry food-borne pathogens like E. Coli.

The Journal Clinical Infectious Disease recently published a study that reported an outbreak of E. Coli in 30 states with 77 illnesses.  Of these 77 people, nearly 35 were so sick they had to be hospitalized and 30 died.    According to Industry Leaders Magazine: The lead author of the study, Dr. Karen Neil, a medical epidemiologist at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said, “What our report shows is that you shouldn’t eat cookie dough raw, no matter where it comes from. It’s supposed to be baked.”

A recent study urges food manufacturers to get realistic with their products’ end purpose and consider presenting cookie dough that is not just ready-to-bake, but ready-to-eat.

Many think the E. Coli came from the eggs in the cookie dough.  But, as it turns out, it wasn’t the eggs or sugar but the raw flour that contained the E. Coli. That means, even if you are making your cookies from scratch, it is still possible to be exposed to E. Coli by eating raw cookie dough. Even though the chances are small that you’ll come into contact with E.Coli, you should still avoid eating raw dough. E. Coli does not just cause a simple stomachache, it is serious and people die.

In this case, it just makes sense to eliminate that risk, no matter how small it may be.

WEEKLY HEALTH NEWS UPDATE

Week of Monday, February 6th, 2012

Mental Attitude: Sleeping Problems? People who are poor sleepers exert a ton of energy trying to force sleep. Sleep is something that has to naturally unfold, so the more you engage in behaviors to try to sleep, the less likely you’re going to fall asleep. Behavior Therapy, Dec 2011

Health Alert: Acid Reflux Up! Reports of acid reflux experienced at least once a week have increased by 47% in the last decade. The prevalence of any acid reflux symptoms rose 30%, while the more severe symptoms rose by 24%. There is concern that these findings will lead to an increase in cancer of the esophagus, a once rare but now more common malignancy that is very difficult to treat. Acid reflux, also known as gastro-esophageal reflux, is where the stomach contents (food and acidic digestive juices) escape upward into the esophagus. This can irritate the esophagus and cause heartburn and other symptoms. Being overweight is a risk factor for acid reflux. Gut, Dec 2011

Diet: Depression And Vitamin D. Because depression affects one in 10 adults in the US and low levels of Vitamin D have been linked to depression, researchers suggest that screening for vitamin D levels in depressed patients and perhaps screening for depression in people with low vitamin D levels might be useful. Vitamin D levels are now commonly tested during routine physical exams, and they are accepted as risk factors for a number of other medical problems such as autoimmune diseases; heart and vascular disease; infectious diseases; osteoporosis; obesity; diabetes; certain cancers; and neurological disorders such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases, multiple sclerosis, and general cognitive decline. Mayo Clinic Proceedings, Jan 2012

Exercise: Good Reasons. Exercise helps to alleviate depression and increases your ability to adapt to cold environments. Surgeon General’s Report on Physical Activity and Health, 1996

Chiropractic: What Did He Say? “The quality of healing is directly proportional to the functional capability of the central nervous system to send and receive nerve messages.” ~ Janson Edwards, MD. PhD

Wellness/Prevention: Don’t Smoke, Be Happy! Smokers have concerns that their quality of life may deteriorate if they stop smoking. However, a study found, in the long term, smokers who successfully quit experience no such deterioration due to quitting. If anything, they see some noticeable improvements. Specifically, compared with those who continued to smoke, quitters scored higher on measures of overall quality of life, health-related quality of life and positive emotions, both one year and three years on. They also felt they had fewer stressors by the third year. Annals of Behavioral Medicine, Jan 2012

WEEKLY HEALTH NEWS UPDATE

Week of Monday, November 21st, 2011

Mental Attitude: When You’re Hot, You’re Hot! When an athlete is doing well, commentators may describe him as being “hot” or “on fire.” Scientists have generally thought such streaks were, primarily, in the eye of the beholder… until now. After an analysis of five years of NBA free throws (over 300,000), researchers believe they have observed the so-called “hot hand” phenomenon: that a streak of positive outcomes is likely to continue. This phenomenon had largely been considered a product of human perception since its coining in 1985 but it appears commentators and fans were right after all.

PLoS ONE, Sept 2011

Health Alert: Risk Of Undetected Strokes! 95% of people aged 65 and older have brain small vessel disease. 25% of healthy seniors (average age 70) have evidence of small, silent strokes. Microbleeds, another type of small vessel disease, are associated with high blood pressure and with Alzheimer’s disease. Unlike major stroke events, these types of small vessel disease gradually build up and increase the risk of clinical stroke events, depression, falls and Alzheimer’s dementia. Canadian PURE MIND, Aug 2011

Diet: Get Your Vitamin D! More than three-quarters of cancer patients have insufficient levels of vitamin D and the lowest levels are associated with more advanced cancer. The five most common primary diagnoses were breast, prostate, lung, thyroid and colorectal cancer. 77% of patients had vitamin D concentrations either deficient or sub-optimal. American Society for Radiation Oncology, Oct 2011

Exercise: Good Reasons. Exercise helps the body resist upper respiratory tract infections, increases your anaerobic threshold (allowing you to work or exercise longer at a higher level, before a significant amount of lactic acid builds up), helps to preserve lean body tissue, and improves ability to recover from physical exertion. Surgeon General’s Report on Physical Activity and Health, 1996

Chiropractic: Is Pediatric Chiropractic Care Safe? The rate of mild adverse events (irritability or soreness lasting less than 24 hours, resolving without the need for additional care) among chiropractic pediatric patients receiving Pediatric Manipulative Therapy (PMT) is .53% -1%. The incidence rate for PMT delivered by Medical Physicians is 6%, and 9% from Osteopaths. Clinical Chiropractic, Sept 2011

Wellness/Prevention: Men Stay Lean! Men develop type 2 diabetes at a lower body mass index than do women (33.69 vs. 31.83). Scottish Diabetes Research Network, Sept 2011
