Mental Attitude: Sleep Tight? Children with excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS), despite little indication of short sleep from traditional measurements, were more likely to experience problems with learning, attention/hyperactivity and conduct than children without EDS. Obesity, symptoms of inattention, depression, anxiety, and asthma have been found to contribute to EDS. Penn State, May 2012

Health Alert: Obesity Projections! At current projections, 42% of the US population will be obese by 2030, with 11% categorized as severely obese. Severe obesity is defined as a body mass index over 40 or roughly 100 pounds overweight. $550 billion could be saved in the next 20 years just by keeping obesity rates at the current level! American Journal of Preventive Medicine, May 2012

Diet: Protein and Diabetes. Diabetes risk increases with higher intake of total protein and animal protein. For every 5% of calories consumed from protein instead of carbohydrate or fat, the risk of developing diabetes increased 30%. Increased animal protein intake coincided with increased intakes of saturated fat, cholesterol,

and heme iron, and with increased body mass index, waist circumference, and blood pressure. Vegetable protein intake was not associated with diabetes risk. Diabetes Care, May 2012

Exercise: Cancer and Exercise. Physical activity is linked to lower rates of breast and colon cancer deaths. Exercise helps moderate insulin levels, reduce inflammation and possibly improve the immune response. Even though direct effects of physical activity on cancer are not definitely proven, given that physical activity is generally safe, improves quality of life for cancer patients, and has numerous other health benefits, adequate physical activity should be a standard part of cancer care. Journal of the National Cancer Institute, May 2012

Chiropractic: Interesting Anatomy. Every organ, tissue and cell in your body requires a two-way information connection with your brain, via the nervous system. How important is your nervous system? It is the only system/organ encased in solid bone, as your skull houses your brain and your vertebra encapsulate your spinal cord. Gray’s Anatomy

Wellness/Prevention: Commutes Risk Health. Individuals with the longest commutes are least likely to report frequently engaging in moderate to vigorous exercise, and most likely to show risk factors for poorer cardiovascular and metabolic health. Commuting more than 10 miles to work is linked with high blood

pressure. American Journal of Preventive Medicine, June 2012

WEEKLY HEALTH NEWS UPDATE

Week of Monday, June 11th, 2012

Mental Attitude: No Emails? Being cut off from work email significantly reduces stress and improves focus. Heart rate monitors were attached to computer users in an office setting, while software sensors detected how often they switched windows. People who read email changed screens twice as often and were in a steady “high alert” state. Those removed from email for five days reported feeling better able to do their jobs and stay on task, with fewer stressful and time-wasting interruptions. UC Irvine and US Army, May 2012

Health Alert: Misusing Prescription Drugs At A Young Age! The peak risk for misusing prescription pain relievers occurs in mid-adolescence, specifically about 16 years old and earlier. Clinicians and public health professionals are prescribing more pain relievers, and research suggests an increased misuse of these drugs and increased rates of overdose deaths. Each year, 1 in 60 young people (between 12-21 years old) begin using prescription pain relievers outside the boundaries of what their doctor intended.

Journal of the American Medical Association, May 2012

Diet: How Much Protein Do I Need? For healthy adults, an estimator used for daily protein intake is 0.36 grams per 1 pound of body weight. Formula = 0.36 grams/pound of body weight. For example, if you weigh

155 lbs, you should consume 56 grams of protein per day (155lbs x .36g/lbs = 56g). Institute of Medicine, 2002

Exercise: Jogging For Life. Jogging 1-2.5 hr/week increases the life expectancy of men by 6.2 years and women by 5.6 years. Jogging improves oxygen uptake, increases insulin sensitivity, improves lipid profiles (raising HDL and lowering triglycerides), lowers blood pressure, reduces platelet aggregation, increases fibrinolytic activity, improves cardiac function, bone density, immune function, reduces inflammation markers, prevents obesity, and improves psychological function. EuroPRevent2012 Meeting, May 2012

Chiropractic: Get A Grip! Nationally ranked Judo competitors experienced up to a 16% increase in grip strength after receiving a cervical spinal adjustment.

Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics, January 2012

Wellness/Prevention: Zinc About It! People regularly taking oral zinc may experience shorter common cold symptoms than those who do not. Higher doses appeared to have a better effect, but taking zinc for just 2-3 days seemed to have no impact at all. Common adverse events associated with zinc supplements are nausea and a

bad taste. Canadian Medical Association Journal, May 2012

WEEKLY HEALTH NEWS UPDATE

Week of Monday, June 4th, 2012

Mental Attitude: Facebook Addiction? According to Dr. Cecilie Schou Andreassen, some users of Facebook have developed a dependency to the social networking site. “Facebook Addiction” is more common among young people who are anxious and socially insecure, probably because those who are anxious find it easier to communicate via social media than face-to-face. Psychological Reports, May 2012

Health Alert: Infection and Cancer. Each year, 16.1% of the 12.7 million total new cancer cases in the world are due to infections that are largely preventable or treatable. Most of these cancer-causing infections were of the gut, liver, cervix and uterus. The Lancet Oncology, May 2012

Diet: Black Pepper and Fat. Black pepper has been used for centuries in traditional Eastern medicine to treat gastrointestinal distress, pain, inflammation and other disorders. A new study found that Piperin, the pungent- tasting substance that gives black pepper its characteristic taste, can block the formation of new fat cells. Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, May 2012

Exercise: Strong Bones! Osteoporosis affects more than 200 million people worldwide, yet many are unaware they are at risk. The disease has been called the silent epidemic because bone loss occurs without symptoms and the disease is often first diagnosed after a fracture. Osteoporosis is more common in women, but men also develop it, usually after age 65. Young men who play volleyball, basketball or other load-bearing sports for 4 hours a week or more may gain protection from developing osteoporosis later in life. Men who increased their load-bearing activity from age 19-24 not only developed more bone, but also had larger bones compared to men who were sedentary during the same period. Bigger bones with more mass are thought to offer a shield against osteoporosis. Journal of Bone and Mineral Research, May 2012

Chiropractic: A Ringing Endorsement! “I came to the point where I wanted an adjustment every day. I

believe in Chiropractic.” ~ Evander Holyfield, 4x World Heavyweight Boxing Champion

Wellness/Prevention: Ancient Remedy Slows Prostate Problems. Caffeic acid phenethyl ester, or CAPE, is a compound isolated from honeybee hive propolis, the resin used by bees to patch up holes in hives. If you feed CAPE to mice with prostate tumors, their tumors will stop growing. After several weeks, if you stop the treatment, the tumors will begin to grow again at their original pace. THE SHOCKING SNACK FOOD!!!

Popcorn Has More Antioxidants Than

Fruits and Vegetables?

More great stuff:

  • Don’t throw out those old fruits and vegetables! Find out why…
  • What’s the best method to cook vegetables without lowering their antioxidant levels?
  • Sitting and a higher risk of death… what you should know.

14 Days To Live – I Don’t Think So!  How Sean Swarner was diagnosed with 2 types of cancer, beat them and then climbed Mt. Everest. That’s just the beginning…

Houston – Imagine someone told you the following: “Popcorn may be the perfect snack food. It’s the only snack that is 100 percent unprocessed whole grain. All other grains are processed and diluted with other ingredients, and although cereals are called ‘whole grain,’ this simply means that over 51 percent of the weight of the product is whole grain. One serving of popcorn will provide more than 70 percent of your daily intake of whole grain. The average person only gets about half a serving of whole grains a day, and popcorn could fill that gap in a very pleasant way.”

Well, according to ScienceDaily, that’s exactly what Joe Vinson, Ph.D., a pioneer in analyzing healthful components in chocolate, nuts and other common foods, had to say.

While speaking at the 243rd National Meeting & Exposition of the American Chemical Society (ACS), Vinson also explained why he thinks this is the case. He said that “polyphenols” are more concentrated in popcorn.  He believes this is due to water content.  Popcorn averages about 4% water but polyphenols in fruits and vegetables are diluted in 90% water.

It is believed that antioxidants are substances that are capable of counteracting the damaging, but normal, effects of the physiological process of oxidation in animal tissue. Antioxidants are nutrients (vitamins and minerals), as well as enzymes (proteins in your body that assist in chemical reactions). They are believed to play a role in preventing the development of such chronic diseases like cancer, heart disease, stroke, Alzheimer’s disease, Rheumatoid arthritis and cataracts.

Many products are marketed for their antioxidant properties and possible anti-aging and/or possible positive health effects.

Back To Popcorn

Here’s something a little surprising about the popcorn research…

Researchers discovered that the hull of the popcorn had the highest concentration of polyphenols and fiber.

The hull is the hard seed-like thing on the inside of the popped popcorn — the part that gets stuck in your teeth or scratches your throat.  I bet you hated the hull… until now!

“Those hulls deserve more respect,” said Vinson, who is with the University of Scranton in Pennsylvania. “They are nutritional gold nuggets.”

But, Vinson also gave a warning…

He said you can quickly ruin the positive effects of popcorn by cooking it in oil and putting butter or fake butter and salt all over it.

That’s the best way to turn a healthy snack into a health disaster.

This is true for all healthy food and it is where most people go wrong when trying to eat healthy.

Most people take great, healthy food and turn it into near junk food in an attempt to make it “taste good.”

The one word that will drop a lot of inches off your waistline and help make you healthier is PLAIN.

Sure, there are ways to prepare healthy foods to give them flavor that are also healthy.  But, when in doubt, go plain.

Here is some advice from ScienceDaily if you are going to eat popcorn…

“Air-popped popcorn has the lowest number of calories, of course,” Vinson said. “Microwave popcorn has twice as many calories as air-popped…  About 43 percent of microwave popcorn is fat, compared to 28 percent if you pop the corn in oil yourself.”

The article also suggests you don’t replace fruit and vegetable servings in your diet with popcorn.  There are many nutrients in fruits and vegetables that you are not going to get with popcorn. The best bet is to use properly cooked popcorn as a snack.

On the topic of cooking, what is the best method to cook vegetables so you lose the least amount of antioxidants?

According to a recent study in the Journal of Food Science, cooking on a flat metal surface with no oil (griddling) maintained the highest antioxidant levels.  Pressure cooking and boiling led to the greatest loss of antioxidants.  Results also depended on the type of vegetable.

One interesting finding from the study was that artichokes were the only vegetable that kept its high antioxidant level during all cooking methods.  The cooking methods tested included boiling, pressure-cooking, baking, microwaving, griddling, and frying.

Wait!  Don’t Throw Out Those

Old Fruits And Vegetables…

Scientists have discovered that antioxidant levels of fruit and vegetables do not decrease as they age, even as they show signs of spoiling, such as “bruising.”  In fact, in some cases, the antioxidant levels actually increased.

In the study, researchers measured the antioxidant level of several kinds of fruits and vegetables.  The fruits and vegetables were stored at 39 degrees and antioxidant levels were routinely checked until visual signs of spoilage were observed.

According to ScienceDaily: “The results showed that, in the days following purchase, fruits and vegetables did not lose any phenolic compounds, ascorbic acid or flavonols — a trio of chemical classes associated with antioxidant content… In some cases, an increase on the antioxidant capacity was observed in the days following their purchase, accompanied by an increase in phenolic compounds.”

But, even if the antioxidant levels are still high, who wants to eat spoiled produce?

Inspirational Story Of The Month

(Names And Details Have Been Changed To Protect Privacy)

They Called Him “Cancer Boy”

Doctors gave him 14 days to live.  Seth Swarner’s response

was to beat cancer and climb Mt. Everest. It gets better…

Some are born to move the world

To live their fantasies

But most of us just dream about the things we’d like to be

Sadder still to watch it die than never to have known it

For you, the blind who once could see the bell tolls for thee…

These are the words of songwriter Neil Peart. For most people, they ring true.  Most people live lives of quiet desperation, dreaming but never achieving or even trying in the first place.

But, then there are those who dream BIG things and achieve even BIGGER things, even when the odds are severely stacked against them.  Or, perhaps BECAUSE the odds were stacked against them.

Sean Swarner is an example of someone who achieved great things after life threw him a serious curve ball.  In fact, Seth only started really living and doing great things AFTER his doctors gave him a death sentence.

Sean was diagnosed with two completely different types of cancer; one at the age of 13 and again at the age of 16, when he was given 14 days to live and read his last rights. He astounded the medical community when he survived both these brutal diseases and also a medical-induced coma.

This gave Sean a different outlook on life.  After college, he wanted to do something BIG.  So, he moved to Colorado and started training to climb mountains.  Eight months later, he was in Nepal at the base camp of Mount Everest, the tallest peak in the world, with a flag inscribed with the names of people touched by cancer tucked in a pocket near his heart (he later planted the flag at the summit).

“When I got to the top, I collapsed to my knees and cried like a baby. It was a culmination of everything I’d done,” Swarner said. “I was crying for everyone touched by cancer. When I got down, I wanted to reach around the world and share my story in hospitals. It’s a purpose, to spread hope. When I was sick, I had nobody to look up to. I had no future.”

Since then, Swarner has climbed to the top of Mount Elbrus in Russia, Mount Vinson in Antarctica and Mount McKinley in Alaska.  Swarner also travels across the country visiting cancer patients.

“Visiting the hospitals, everybody has a story to tell,” he said. “God gave us two ears and one mouth for a reason. Everybody has a story and you can learn something from anybody. Just [sit] on a plane next to somebody and saying hello.”

The bell has yet to toll for Seth Swarner.

We love helping our patients and their friends and relatives through their tough times and getting them feeling better!  We are here to help you stay feeling better and looking younger!  Don’t be a stranger.  You really can afford Chiropractic care! Don’t wait until you can no longer move!

Did You Know?…

Laughter Is The Best Medicine

Laughter is one of the most powerful ways to ward off disease and illness known to man. Most of us probably don’t think about how often we laugh, but rest assured, our body is keeping count. Children seem to understand that laughter is the best medicine, as they laugh, on average, up to 400 times a day. Adults average only 17 times per day. Is it any wonder children seem to enjoy life more than their parents?

The benefits of laughter are far reaching. Laughter brings joy to your life and to those around you; makes your cheeks red and your face glow, making you more approachable and even more loveable; alleviates pain in the body and provides you with a sense of well-being by releasing endorphins and serotonin, which have been proven to help reduce pain and can even enhance treatments of many illnesses and diseases; reduces the negative stress hormones, such as cortisol and epinephrine; allows us to connect with others more readily and to share a common bond with them; and also helps supply your body with oxygen, helping you feel full of energy and life.

Your body treats laughter just like exercise, as it makes the blood vessels work more efficiently, increases blood flow to the heart, and helps to increase lung capacity.  A good belly laugh can boost your immune system’s ability to ward off disease for up to three days. Imagine the benefit of laughing multiple times daily!

Laughter is a great distraction from the stresses and rigors of life. Any time you can change your focus from the negative emotions of your day, even for just a few moments, the better off you are. Laughter also enhances your ability to have a good night’s sleep.

The bottom line is that laughing is one of the best natural health remedies. So, if your stress levels are mounting, if you are feeling unhealthy, if you are feeling rundown and depressed, or you just want some relief, then LAUGH! The more you laugh, the better you feel, and the better those around you will feel too.

Tip Of The Month

Are You Sitting Yourself To Death?

Do you sit all day or during a good portion of your day?  If you do, you are really going to want to read every word of this article.  It may be a matter of life and death.  Literally.  Here is why… According to cancer.org: “A new study from the American Cancer Society researchers [found] it’s not just how much physical activity you get, but how much time you spend sitting that can affect your risk of death. Researchers say time spent sitting was independently associated with total mortality, regardless of physical activity level. They conclude that public health messages should promote both being physically active and reducing time spent sitting.”

This is important because this study suggests it is not only about the physical activity you do, it is also about the time you spend sitting.  Going to the gym or for a run at night does not seem to make up for sitting all day at work. According to the study, the researchers “found that more leisure time spent sitting was associated with higher risks of mortality, particularly in women. Women who reported more than six hours per day of sitting were 37 percent more likely to die during the time period studied than those who sat fewer than 3 hours a day. Men who sat more than 6 hours a day were 18 percent more likely to die than those who sat fewer than 3 hours per day. The association remained virtually unchanged after adjusting for physical activity level. Associations were stronger for cardiovascular disease mortality than for cancer mortality.  When combined with a lack of physical activity, the association was even stronger. Women and men who both sat more and were less physically active were 94% and 48% more likely, respectively, to die compared with those who reported sitting the least and being most active.”

If the results of this study are accurate, people should not only get the proper amounts of exercise, but they should decrease the hours a day they spend sitting.

Mental Attitude: Bad Obligation? Ever stay on a job longer than you wanted because you felt obligated? Staying in an organization out of a sense of obligation or for lack of alternatives can lead to emotional exhaustion, a chronic state of physical and mental depletion resulting from continuous stress and excessive job demands.

Human Relations, April 2012

Health Alert: Chronic Stress! Psychological stress is associated with greater risk for depression, heart disease and infectious diseases. Until now, it has not been clear exactly how stress influences disease and health. Chronic psychological stress is associated with the body losing its ability to regulate the inflammatory response. Inflammation is partly regulated by the hormone cortisol and when cortisol is not allowed to serve this function, inflammation can get out of control. Prolonged stress alters the effectiveness of cortisol to regulate the inflammatory response because it decreases tissue sensitivity to the hormone. Specifically, immune cells become insensitive to cortisol’s regulatory effect. In turn, runaway inflammation is thought to promote the development and progression of many diseases. Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, April 2012

Diet: Your Knees! The supplement glucosamine sulfate taken at oral doses of 1500 mg a day is more effective than a placebo in treating symptoms for patients with osteoarthritis of the knee. Arthritis & Rheumatism, 2007

Exercise: Exercise Your Arthritis Away! Subjects with osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis who participated in aerobic conditioning exercise showed significant improvement over control subjects who participated in only range of motion exercises. Arthritis & Rheumatism, 1984

Chiropractic: Another Reason To Maintain Spinal Health! Whatever the cause, by age 50, 85-90% of adults show evidence of degenerative disk disease at autopsy. Arthritis & Rheumatism, 1979

Wellness/Prevention: What’s For Breakfast? Eating foods at breakfast that have a low glycemic index may help prevent a spike in blood sugar throughout the morning and after the next meal of the day. These breakfast foods can also increase feelings of satiety and fullness and may make people less likely to overeat throughout the day. The glycemic index ranks foods on the extent to which they raise blood sugar levels after eating. Foods with a high index are rapidly digested and result in high fluctuations in blood sugar levels. Foods with a low glycemic index produce gradual rises in blood sugar and insulin levels and are considered healthier, especially for people with diabetes. Low glycemic foods include rolled oats and groats, whole grains, nuts and seeds, sweet potato, barley b-glucan, yam

flour, glucomannan, durum pasta, vegetable flours, chia/flax seed and resistant starch.

Mental Attitude: Dementia! The number of people globally with dementia is set to rise from its current 35.6 million, to 65 million by 2030 and 115 million by 2050. Currently, $604 billion are spent each year worldwide on treating and caring for individuals with dementia. This toll includes the provision of health and social care, as well as loss of income of the dementia patients and their caregivers, as many caregivers have to give up their jobs to look after a person with dementia. World Health Organization, April 2012

Health Alert: America’s Obesity Epidemic. The scope of the obesity epidemic in the US has been greatly underestimated. Researchers found that the Body Mass Index (BMI) substantially under-diagnoses obesity when compared to the Dual Energy X-ray Absorptiometry (DXA) scan, a direct simultaneous measure of body fat, muscle mass, and bone density. The study found 39% of Americans who are classified as overweight based on BMI are actually obese as measured by DXA. The BMI is an insensitive measure of obesity, prone to under-diagnosis, while direct fat measurements are superior because they show distribution of body fat. PLoS ONE, April 2012

Diet: How Should You Take It? For reversing damage and promoting repair to cartilage, the supplements Chondroitin Sulfate and Glucosamine have been shown to be more effective if taken together, as the mixture of the two allows them to act synergistically. Osteoarthritis Cartilage, 2006

Exercise: Caffeine & Exercise? According to a 14-week study conducted on mice, caffeine and exercise may cut the risk of developing skin cancers caused by sun exposure. Researchers found 62% fewer non-melanoma skin tumors and the size of tumors reduced by 85% in the caffeine and exercise group when compared to the control

group (no caffeine, no exercise). The results of the caffeine and exercise group also exceeded the other two groups in the study (caffeine, no exercise and exercise, no caffeine).

Mental Attitude: Less Distress If Active! Researchers found that older adults who experienced any level of psychological distress were more likely to experience physical functional limitations than those who did not. Psychological distress scores indicated that 8.4% of all older adult participants experienced some level of psychological distress and older adults who experienced even a moderate level of psychological distress were the most likely group to experience a functional limitation — almost seven times more likely than those who did not report any psychological distress! Journal of the American Geriatrics Society, April 2012

Health Alert: Super Markets and Waist Size. People who shop at discount supermarkets or in supermarkets in areas with poorly educated consumers have higher than normal body mass indices (BMI) and waist circumferences. According to the study’s author, Basile Chaix, “A public health strategy to reduce excess weight may be to intervene on specific supermarkets to change food purchasing behavior, as supermarkets are where dietary preferences are materialized into definite purchased foods.” PLoS One, April 2012

Diet: Red Wine & Fruit For Fat. Piceatannol is a compound found in red wine, grapes, blueberries and passion fruit. It’s able to block cellular processes that allow fat cells to develop, opening a door to a potential method to control obesity. Journal of Biological Chemistry, April 2012

Exercise: Regular Walking Regimen. Cancer patients can literally take a step-by-step approach to combat fatigue following surgical treatment. This fatigue doesn’t go away with sleep, affects daily activities (doing your personal hygiene in the morning, getting up and getting dressed, going from the bedroom to breakfast, etc.) and can also lead to anxiety and depression. Patients who underwent an operation as part of their cancer treatment and then started a regular walking regimen experienced less fatigue than cancer survivors who did not do the walking program. Journal of the American College of Surgeons, April 2012

Chiropractic: Keep Your Blood Flowing. Patients with atherosclerosis are associated with increased disk degeneration and subjective low back pain. Atherosclerosis slows blood flow to the disk complex, which, in turn, leads to degeneration. Spine, 1997

Wellness/Prevention: Cancer Is A Preventable Disease! Only 5-10% of cancer cases are due to genetic defects. The other 90-95% of cancer cases are due to environmental and lifestyle factors including smoking, alcohol consumption, poor diet, obesity, infectious agents, environmental pollution and radiation.

Mental Attitude: Berry Good News. Men who regularly consume foods rich in flavonoids (such as berries, apples, certain vegetables, tea and red wine) may significantly reduce their risk for developing Parkinson’s disease. Flavonoids are naturally occurring, bioactive compounds present in many plant-based foods and drinks.

Neurology, April 2012

Health Alert: Stressed? The risk for coronary heart disease and stroke increases by 30% in a person whose partner has cancer. The cause is probably the negative stress to which the cancer patient’s partner is exposed. Previous studies show that stress can affect the nervous system, blood pressure, and inflammation, increasing the risk of developing coronary heart disease and stroke. Centre for Primary Healthcare Research in Malmö, April 2012

Diet: Pain Relief. The supplement Methylsulfonylmethane gave osteoarthritis patients relief from symptoms of pain and physical dysfunction. Osteoarthritis Cartilage, 2008

Exercise: Being Fit. Improving or maintaining physical fitness appears to help obese and overweight children reach a healthy weight. During a four-year study, obese and overweight girls and boys who achieved fitness were 2.5 to 5 times more likely to reach a healthy weight than those who stayed underfit. Obesity, April 2012

Chiropractic: Slowing Degeneration? Morphologic changes in the endplate that occur with advancing age or degeneration can interfere with normal disk nutrition and further the spinal degenerative process. Degeneration decreases the ability of the spine to move through a full range of motion, which alters the integrity of the proteoglycans and water concentration, reducing the number of viable cells with decreased movement of solutes in and out of the disk. Pain, 2004

Wellness/Prevention: Unhealthy Snacks, Sodas and Watching TV. In a study of obesity among European children, Dr. Yannis Manios, Assistant Professor at Harokopio University in Athens, writes, “We found that many countries are lacking clear guidelines on healthy eating and active play. However, there is good evidence linking sedentary behavior (like TV watching) with subsequent obesity. Therefore, TV-watching in kindergartens should be replaced by more active, non-competitive, fun activities which will promote the participation of the whole class and help children to achieve optimal growth, health and well-being. Similarly at home, TVs in the bedroom and unhealthy snacks in the kitchen cupboard are a bad idea. Parents should also remember that their role is not only to

provide healthy food and drink options but to act as a role model themselves, since kids are copying their behaviors.”

DEAD MAN SUCCEEDING:  How Sam Cawthorn Became An Overwhelming Success After Being Pronounced Dead And Losing His Arm In A Tragic Car Accident.

ouston – Back pain is very common.  In fact, it has been estimated that up to 80% of people will suffer from back pain in their lifetime.  It is easy to search for that stat on the web but finding a solution for back pain has proven much more difficult.

For a long time, rest was the “treatment” of choice. In many cases, bed rest.  In recent years, experts have prescribed a more active approach.

Physical therapy and specific therapeutic exercises came to the forefront of many back pain treatments.  Now, results from new research are hinting at a different approach, an approach where both (rest and exercise) are right… and wrong.

Here’s what this is all about:  A study published February 29, 2012 in BMC Medicine compared rest vs. active treatment with low back patients with modic changes (MC).  Modic changes have been described as early disk degenerative changes only seen on an MRI.

Results: In total, 100 patients were included in the study. Data was available on 87 patients at 10 weeks and 96 patients at one-year follow-up and used in the intention-to-treat analysis.

Conclusions: No statistically significant differences were found between the two treatment approaches (rest vs. active treatment) in patients with persistent LBP and modic changes.

What does all this mean?  According to the study’s lead author, Rikke K. Jensen, MSc, “The results do not suggest that patients with MCs should not exercise… But I think clinicians should be careful; when patients come back and say this treatment didn’t work, it’s not because they did it the wrong way or they didn’t do it enough. It’s very possible that this treatment is just not very effective for this group of patients.”

In other words – THERE IS NO ONE APPROACH THAT WORKS BEST FOR ALL PATIENTS WITH LOW BACK PAIN.

It is estimated that 40% of low back pain sufferers have modic changes.  This means exercise may not be the best treatment protocol for 4 out of 10 sufferers.

The cause of modic changes is unknown. Jensen said, “We know that they are part of the degeneration process but we still don’t know what causes them.”

It is theorized they may be caused by mechanical stress. Mechanical stress can cause excessive loading, micro fractures and inflammation of the vertebral endplate and bone marrow.

“When you’re jumping up and down on micro fractures, they tend not to get better,” said Jensen. “It was important for us to test the hypothesis that people don’t improve with exercise if they have these MCs, and there are other treatment options that could prove to be more effective.”

Here’s something interesting:  One Chiropractic theory is that malfunctioning spinal joints cause abnormal mechanical stress.  Over time, this can cause degenerative changes.

So, is it possible that exercising on a spine with malfunctioning joints is doing more harm than good?

Some Chiropractors have theorized that these spinal malfunctions should be corrected BEFORE an exercise program is started.

More research needs to be done but it seems like there is no one answer when it comes to helping back pain sufferers.  Every case is individual and no one way is the ultimate solution.

Is the best way to treat back pain to first correct the mechanical malfunctions of the spine and then use exercise to regain strength and flexibility?

This and other questions still need to be answered.  Up-to-date doctors will see each case of low back pain as individual and devise a unique treatment plan.  They will also know when to adjust the treatment plan if it is not working.

WARNING:  FDA Links Pain

Drug To Joint Failure

Pharmaceutical company Pfizer thought they had a great new painkiller.  As it turns out, The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) says there is a clear association between the nerve-blocking medication and incidences of joint failure that led the agency to halt studies.

According to USA Today, “Problems with the [drug] began to emerge in the summer of 2010. Beginning in June, Pfizer halted studies of its experimental injection tanezumab in patients with osteoarthritis, low back pain and diabetic nerve pain. The action was requested by the Food and Drug Administration, after researchers reported that osteoarthritis actually worsened in some patients, causing joint failure in some cases.”

TV doctor gets “schooled” about Chiropractors.

Chiropractic has been through a lot.  Its founder, Daniel D. Palmer, was put in jail for practicing medicine without a license.  Many other Chiropractors were jailed for the same offense.

Times have changed.  Chiropractic has been licensed in every state for many decades and is accepted by mainstream medicine.  In fact, chiropractors and medical doctors work together every day in clinics around the world.

But, some ignorance still exists, such as this example taken from an ABCNews4 story:

It’s Wellness Wednesday and that means our very own back expert, Dr. Ellen Rhame of the Southeastern Spine Institute, stopped by to answer today’s viewer question.

Anita from West Ashley wrote in, “I have chronic back pain. Should I be seen at Southeastern Spine prior to getting regular adjustments from a chiropractor?”

Dr. Ellen says there is nothing wrong with chiropractors. The only issue is she wants to make sure that people are getting evaluated properly before they look for alternate means of medicine.  At the Institute, they can show you what’s wrong with your back and give you some ideas on what your next steps should be.  Dr. Ellen says that she is just concerned that some people will go without being treated properly and do more harm than good.

Here is a comment posted by a reader on the program’s website: “Dr. Ellen is not well-versed about chiropractic physicians. By law, they are required to be able to differentially diagnose conditions that could mask as back pain. For example, chiropractors must take multiple tests at the state and federal levels to show proficiency in the ability to diagnose neurological, urinary, gynecological, intestinal, hormonal, cardiovascular, pediatric and other non-musculoskeletal conditions. You can be confident your chiropractic physician has the training to send you to the proper medical provider if your back pain is caused from some other condition.”

DEAD MAN SUCCEEDING

How Sam Cawthorn became an overwhelming success after being pronounced dead and losing his arm in a tragic car accident…

Amazing.  Awesome.  Unbelievable.  We hear these words just about every day. 99.9% of the time, they describe something un-amazing,  un-awesome, un-unbelievable and quite frankly, pretty common.  In the case of Australian native Sam Cawthorn, things are very different.  If you used all these words to describe him, you would be at least accurate and you may even be under-exaggerating him. Sam has a passion for helping people.  He previously worked as a Regional Industry Careers Adviser and assisted local industry to identify skill shortages and provide solutions for youth entering the workforce.

That’s great, but not “Amazing.”  Here’s what’s amazing…

In October 2006, Cawthorn was involved in a head-on collision with a semi-trailer.  It was a horrific accident and Cawthorn was pronounced dead on the scene.  Miraculously, he was resuscitated… but he lost his right arm and has a permanent disability in his right leg.

Sam was hospitalized after the accident for more than 5 months and was told he may not survive and would never walk again.  A year later, he was still breathing and back on his fee.

In 2007, he started “Be Motivated,” a program aimed at providing young people with skills to improve their confidence and self-belief in order to attain personal goals while remaining positive when faced with adversity. To deliver this information, he regularly conducts motivational assemblies at schools in Australia and around the world.  Sam wants everyone he works with to discover their purpose and strive towards well-defined goals.  He believes having a great and positive mental attitude is extremely important and there are no excuses for not achieving whatever you want to achieve in life.

One of his major principles is “bouncing forward” after a setback.  Setbacks are simply challenges that will propel you forward, if you have the right approach and mindset, and if you let them.

Sam was awarded the 2009 Young Australian of the Year Award from Tasmania.  The same year, he also started the Cawthorn Foundation.  The goal of the foundation is to assist disadvantaged youth in developing countries to enjoy basic human rights.

Also in 2009, Cawthorn became Ambassador for CBM Australia’s human rights advocacy movement which creates awareness for people living with disabilities in developing nations. Under a campaign titled ‘Create2Change,’ Cawthorn traveled around India with a film crew to find stories of individuals living with a disability in the most poverty stricken communities.

Cawthorn is also a musician and one of the few people in the world able to play a guitar with an above elbow amputation.

Cawthorn loves working with children and was quoted as saying, “A lot of these young people come over to me and share with me their own journeys, and I guess by talking with me they feel encouraged and realize there is a light at the end of the tunnel because they can see someone who has suffered massive trauma, yet their attitude, positivity and happiness can shine through.”

Yes, he seems legitimately awesome!

Did You Know?…

Fresh Juice For Your Health

Adding fresh juices to your diet may be one of the best everyday things you can do for your health. With juicing, you can take in far more nutrients from fresh fruits and vegetables than you ever could just by eating them straight. These nutrients both protect us from disease and boost our health and vitality.  For example, it’s easy to consume the nutrients of a couple of pounds of carrots in a day if you juice them. While carrots are well known to be rich in Vitamin A and help with our night vision, carrot juice is also a great juice to detoxify the liver. This means your liver can process out more of the chemicals that most people are regularly exposed to. Because your liver is also your prime fat burning organ, detoxifying your liver also means it’s easier to lose excess weight.  If you add some beets to your carrot juice, you can also take in hearty doses of betalains, which raises your body’s detoxification enzymes. This helps your body process out even more manmade chemicals that, without detoxification methods, can be hard to remove. Greens of any sort are another favorite for juicing. Greens are powerful because they add lots of chlorophyll to the body, a powerful blood cleanser and blood builder. With juicing, you can add in lots of fabulously healthy vegetables that you might not otherwise include much of in your diet (and these juices are delicious, too).

Tip Of The Month

When Is A Headache “Just A Headache” & When Is It A Medical Emergency?

Have you ever had a headache?  Most people have. Some get them quite frequently.  Well, has this thought ever crossed your mind: “Is this just another headache… or is this something serious?”  That is an important question that could save you or a loved one’s life.  But, before we differentiate headaches, the first thing to understand is that there is no such thing as “just a headache.”  While some are MORE dangerous and even life threatening, all headaches are a sign that something is wrong.  Know this: Pain is not normal.  It is your body’s way of telling you there is a problem.  For example, if you put your hand too close to a fire, it hurts.  The closer you get… the more it hurts.  Too close, and it starts to burn.  If you have a headache, there is a cause.  Your body is sending you warning signals and you should be examined by a health care professional trained to diagnose headaches, their causes and treatment options.  Chiropractors are trained to diagnose many types of headaches and have had success treating one of the most common types of headaches, the cervicogenic headache. A cervicogenic headache is a headache that is characterized by chronic head pain that is referred to the head from either bony structures or soft tissue of the neck.  So, if you get headaches, a Chiropractor is a good option for both diagnosis and treatment.

Now, what you should know about headaches and medical emergencies?  In a recent article in Tribune Newspapers, Joshua Miller, Medical Director at the Cleveland Clinic’s Strongsville Family Health Center, said, “The headaches that worry us are ones that start suddenly, like a thunderclap… especially if it’s accompanied by a stiff neck, nausea, fever, bright lights bothering your eyes… it could be bleeding on the brain, encephalitis, meningitis or some other viral or bacterial infection within the spinal fluid.”

Here are other signs and symptoms of a medical emergency:  Chest pain and squeezing/tightness of the chest, nausea and shortness of breath, and fluttering heart.   If you feel short of breath after doing an everyday task you usually do not get shortness of breath from, you should not ignore it.  Also, abdominal pain should not be ignored.  Fever, abdominal pain, vomiting can mean big trouble.  Kidney stones and gallbladder disease are possibilities.  Bottom line: you should not try to diagnose yourself.  No headaches are “normal” and sometimes, they can be quite serious.

WEEKLY HEALTH NEWS UPDATE

Week of Monday, April 30th, 2012

Mental Attitude: Meditation. Adults with memory impairment and memory loss may benefit from mantra-based meditation (12 minutes of meditation per day for 8 weeks). Mantra-based meditation has demonstrated a positive effect on patients’ emotional responses to stress, fatigue and anxiety. Findings revealed a substantial increase in cerebral blood flow in the patients’ prefrontal, superior frontal, and superior parietal cortices, and also better cognitive function.

Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine, March 2012

Health Alert: Diabetics And Stroke. 26 million Americans have diabetes, and more than half are younger than 65. The longer you have diabetes, the higher your risk for stroke. Compared to people without diabetes (after considering other factors such as age, smoking history, physical activity, history of heart disease, blood pressure and cholesterol), the risk of stroke increased 70% in people with diabetes for less than 5 years, 80% in people with diabetes for 5-10 years and three- fold in people with diabetes for 10 years or more. American Heart Association, March 2012

Diet: Seeing Things? Hungry people see food-related words more clearly than people who’ve just eaten. This change in vision happens at the earliest perceptual stages, before higher parts of the brain have a chance to change the messages coming from the eyes. Psychological Science, March 2012

Exercise: Good Reasons. Exercise helps to alleviate low-back pain, helps to reduce the amount of insulin required to control blood sugar levels in Type I (insulin-dependent) diabetics and improves mental alertness.

Surgeon General’s Report on Physical Activity and Health, 1996

Chiropractic: Hold Your Head Up! “Head in forward posture can add up to thirty pounds of abnormal leverage on the cervical spine. This can pull the entire spine out of alignment. Forward head posture (FHP) may result in the loss of 30% of vital lung capacity. These breath-related effects are primarily due to the loss of the cervical lordosis, which blocks the action of the hyoid muscles, especially the inferior hyoid responsible for helping lift the first rib during inhalation.”

~Rene Cailliet M.D., famous medical author and former Director of the Department of Physical Medicine and

Rehabilitation at the University of Southern California

Wellness/Prevention: Avoid Absenteeism. The US is losing $226 billion per year due to employee absenteeism. A worker is less likely to take sick leave if their supervisor offers support (lightened work load or stress management training) when an employee is experiencing psychosomatic stress symptoms. The worker feels inclined to reciprocate the supportive treatment by keeping their work effort high.

European Journal of Work and Organizational Psychology, January 2012
