Mental Attitude: Less Distress If Active! Researchers found that older adults who experienced any level of psychological distress were more likely to experience physical functional limitations than those who did not. Psychological distress scores indicated that 8.4% of all older adult participants experienced some level of psychological distress and older adults who experienced even a moderate level of psychological distress were the most likely group to experience a functional limitation — almost seven times more likely than those who did not report any psychological distress! Journal of the American Geriatrics Society, April 2012

Health Alert: Super Markets and Waist Size. People who shop at discount supermarkets or in supermarkets in areas with poorly educated consumers have higher than normal body mass indices (BMI) and waist circumferences. According to the study’s author, Basile Chaix, “A public health strategy to reduce excess weight may be to intervene on specific supermarkets to change food purchasing behavior, as supermarkets are where dietary preferences are materialized into definite purchased foods.” PLoS One, April 2012

Diet: Red Wine & Fruit For Fat. Piceatannol is a compound found in red wine, grapes, blueberries and passion fruit. It’s able to block cellular processes that allow fat cells to develop, opening a door to a potential method to control obesity. Journal of Biological Chemistry, April 2012

Exercise: Regular Walking Regimen. Cancer patients can literally take a step-by-step approach to combat fatigue following surgical treatment. This fatigue doesn’t go away with sleep, affects daily activities (doing your personal hygiene in the morning, getting up and getting dressed, going from the bedroom to breakfast, etc.) and can also lead to anxiety and depression. Patients who underwent an operation as part of their cancer treatment and then started a regular walking regimen experienced less fatigue than cancer survivors who did not do the walking program. Journal of the American College of Surgeons, April 2012

Chiropractic: Keep Your Blood Flowing. Patients with atherosclerosis are associated with increased disk degeneration and subjective low back pain. Atherosclerosis slows blood flow to the disk complex, which, in turn, leads to degeneration. Spine, 1997

Wellness/Prevention: Cancer Is A Preventable Disease! Only 5-10% of cancer cases are due to genetic defects. The other 90-95% of cancer cases are due to environmental and lifestyle factors including smoking, alcohol consumption, poor diet, obesity, infectious agents, environmental pollution and radiation.

Mental Attitude: Berry Good News. Men who regularly consume foods rich in flavonoids (such as berries, apples, certain vegetables, tea and red wine) may significantly reduce their risk for developing Parkinson’s disease. Flavonoids are naturally occurring, bioactive compounds present in many plant-based foods and drinks.

Neurology, April 2012

Health Alert: Stressed? The risk for coronary heart disease and stroke increases by 30% in a person whose partner has cancer. The cause is probably the negative stress to which the cancer patient’s partner is exposed. Previous studies show that stress can affect the nervous system, blood pressure, and inflammation, increasing the risk of developing coronary heart disease and stroke. Centre for Primary Healthcare Research in Malmö, April 2012

Diet: Pain Relief. The supplement Methylsulfonylmethane gave osteoarthritis patients relief from symptoms of pain and physical dysfunction. Osteoarthritis Cartilage, 2008

Exercise: Being Fit. Improving or maintaining physical fitness appears to help obese and overweight children reach a healthy weight. During a four-year study, obese and overweight girls and boys who achieved fitness were 2.5 to 5 times more likely to reach a healthy weight than those who stayed underfit. Obesity, April 2012

Chiropractic: Slowing Degeneration? Morphologic changes in the endplate that occur with advancing age or degeneration can interfere with normal disk nutrition and further the spinal degenerative process. Degeneration decreases the ability of the spine to move through a full range of motion, which alters the integrity of the proteoglycans and water concentration, reducing the number of viable cells with decreased movement of solutes in and out of the disk. Pain, 2004

Wellness/Prevention: Unhealthy Snacks, Sodas and Watching TV. In a study of obesity among European children, Dr. Yannis Manios, Assistant Professor at Harokopio University in Athens, writes, “We found that many countries are lacking clear guidelines on healthy eating and active play. However, there is good evidence linking sedentary behavior (like TV watching) with subsequent obesity. Therefore, TV-watching in kindergartens should be replaced by more active, non-competitive, fun activities which will promote the participation of the whole class and help children to achieve optimal growth, health and well-being. Similarly at home, TVs in the bedroom and unhealthy snacks in the kitchen cupboard are a bad idea. Parents should also remember that their role is not only to

provide healthy food and drink options but to act as a role model themselves, since kids are copying their behaviors.”

DEAD MAN SUCCEEDING:  How Sam Cawthorn Became An Overwhelming Success After Being Pronounced Dead And Losing His Arm In A Tragic Car Accident.

H

ouston – Back pain is very common.  In fact, it has been estimated that up to 80% of people will suffer from back pain in their lifetime.  It is easy to search for that stat on the web but finding a solution for back pain has proven much more difficult.

For a long time, rest was the “treatment” of choice. In many cases, bed rest.  In recent years, experts have prescribed a more active approach.

Physical therapy and specific therapeutic exercises came to the forefront of many back pain treatments.  Now, results from new research are hinting at a different approach, an approach where both (rest and exercise) are right… and wrong.

Here’s what this is all about:  A study published February 29, 2012 in BMC Medicine compared rest vs. active treatment with low back patients with modic changes (MC).  Modic changes have been described as early disk degenerative changes only seen on an MRI.

Results: In total, 100 patients were included in the study. Data was available on 87 patients at 10 weeks and 96 patients at one-year follow-up and used in the intention-to-treat analysis.

Conclusions: No statistically significant differences were found between the two treatment approaches (rest vs. active treatment) in patients with persistent LBP and modic changes.

What does all this mean?  According to the study’s lead author, Rikke K. Jensen, MSc, “The results do not suggest that patients with MCs should not exercise… But I think clinicians should be careful; when patients come back and say this treatment didn’t work, it’s not because they did it the wrong way or they didn’t do it enough. It’s very possible that this treatment is just not very effective for this group of patients.”

In other words – THERE IS NO ONE APPROACH THAT WORKS BEST FOR ALL PATIENTS WITH LOW BACK PAIN.

It is estimated that 40% of low back pain sufferers have modic changes.  This means exercise may not be the best treatment protocol for 4 out of 10 sufferers.

The cause of modic changes is unknown. Jensen said, “We know that they are part of the degeneration process but we still don’t know what causes them.”

It is theorized they may be caused by mechanical stress. Mechanical stress can cause excessive loading, micro fractures and inflammation of the vertebral endplate and bone marrow.

“When you’re jumping up and down on micro fractures, they tend not to get better,” said Jensen. “It was important for us to test the hypothesis that people don’t improve with exercise if they have these MCs, and there are other treatment options that could prove to be more effective.”

Here’s something interesting:  One Chiropractic theory is that malfunctioning spinal joints cause abnormal mechanical stress.  Over time, this can cause degenerative changes.

So, is it possible that exercising on a spine with malfunctioning joints is doing more harm than good?

Some Chiropractors have theorized that these spinal malfunctions should be corrected BEFORE an exercise program is started.

More research needs to be done but it seems like there is no one answer when it comes to helping back pain sufferers.  Every case is individual and no one way is the ultimate solution.

Is the best way to treat back pain to first correct the mechanical malfunctions of the spine and then use exercise to regain strength and flexibility?

This and other questions still need to be answered.  Up-to-date doctors will see each case of low back pain as individual and devise a unique treatment plan.  They will also know when to adjust the treatment plan if it is not working.

WARNING:  FDA Links Pain

Drug To Joint Failure

Pharmaceutical company Pfizer thought they had a great new painkiller.  As it turns out, The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) says there is a clear association between the nerve-blocking medication and incidences of joint failure that led the agency to halt studies.

According to USA Today, “Problems with the [drug] began to emerge in the summer of 2010. Beginning in June, Pfizer halted studies of its experimental injection tanezumab in patients with osteoarthritis, low back pain and diabetic nerve pain. The action was requested by the Food and Drug Administration, after researchers reported that osteoarthritis actually worsened in some patients, causing joint failure in some cases.”

TV doctor gets “schooled” about Chiropractors.

Chiropractic has been through a lot.  Its founder, Daniel D. Palmer, was put in jail for practicing medicine without a license.  Many other Chiropractors were jailed for the same offense.

Times have changed.  Chiropractic has been licensed in every state for many decades and is accepted by mainstream medicine.  In fact, chiropractors and medical doctors work together every day in clinics around the world.

But, some ignorance still exists, such as this example taken from an ABCNews4 story:

It’s Wellness Wednesday and that means our very own back expert, Dr. Ellen Rhame of the Southeastern Spine Institute, stopped by to answer today’s viewer question.

Anita from West Ashley wrote in, “I have chronic back pain. Should I be seen at Southeastern Spine prior to getting regular adjustments from a chiropractor?”

Dr. Ellen says there is nothing wrong with chiropractors. The only issue is she wants to make sure that people are getting evaluated properly before they look for alternate means of medicine.  At the Institute, they can show you what’s wrong with your back and give you some ideas on what your next steps should be.  Dr. Ellen says that she is just concerned that some people will go without being treated properly and do more harm than good.

Here is a comment posted by a reader on the program’s website: “Dr. Ellen is not well-versed about chiropractic physicians. By law, they are required to be able to differentially diagnose conditions that could mask as back pain. For example, chiropractors must take multiple tests at the state and federal levels to show proficiency in the ability to diagnose neurological, urinary, gynecological, intestinal, hormonal, cardiovascular, pediatric and other non-musculoskeletal conditions. You can be confident your chiropractic physician has the training to send you to the proper medical provider if your back pain is caused from some other condition.”

DEAD MAN SUCCEEDING

How Sam Cawthorn became an overwhelming success after being pronounced dead and losing his arm in a tragic car accident…

Amazing.  Awesome.  Unbelievable.  We hear these words just about every day. 99.9% of the time, they describe something un-amazing,  un-awesome, un-unbelievable and quite frankly, pretty common.  In the case of Australian native Sam Cawthorn, things are very different.  If you used all these words to describe him, you would be at least accurate and you may even be under-exaggerating him. Sam has a passion for helping people.  He previously worked as a Regional Industry Careers Adviser and assisted local industry to identify skill shortages and provide solutions for youth entering the workforce.

That’s great, but not “Amazing.”  Here’s what’s amazing…

In October 2006, Cawthorn was involved in a head-on collision with a semi-trailer.  It was a horrific accident and Cawthorn was pronounced dead on the scene.  Miraculously, he was resuscitated… but he lost his right arm and has a permanent disability in his right leg.

Sam was hospitalized after the accident for more than 5 months and was told he may not survive and would never walk again.  A year later, he was still breathing and back on his fee.

In 2007, he started “Be Motivated,” a program aimed at providing young people with skills to improve their confidence and self-belief in order to attain personal goals while remaining positive when faced with adversity. To deliver this information, he regularly conducts motivational assemblies at schools in Australia and around the world.  Sam wants everyone he works with to discover their purpose and strive towards well-defined goals.  He believes having a great and positive mental attitude is extremely important and there are no excuses for not achieving whatever you want to achieve in life.

One of his major principles is “bouncing forward” after a setback.  Setbacks are simply challenges that will propel you forward, if you have the right approach and mindset, and if you let them.

Sam was awarded the 2009 Young Australian of the Year Award from Tasmania.  The same year, he also started the Cawthorn Foundation.  The goal of the foundation is to assist disadvantaged youth in developing countries to enjoy basic human rights.

Also in 2009, Cawthorn became Ambassador for CBM Australia’s human rights advocacy movement which creates awareness for people living with disabilities in developing nations. Under a campaign titled ‘Create2Change,’ Cawthorn traveled around India with a film crew to find stories of individuals living with a disability in the most poverty stricken communities.

Cawthorn is also a musician and one of the few people in the world able to play a guitar with an above elbow amputation.

Cawthorn loves working with children and was quoted as saying, “A lot of these young people come over to me and share with me their own journeys, and I guess by talking with me they feel encouraged and realize there is a light at the end of the tunnel because they can see someone who has suffered massive trauma, yet their attitude, positivity and happiness can shine through.”

Yes, he seems legitimately awesome!

Did You Know?…

Fresh Juice For Your Health

Adding fresh juices to your diet may be one of the best everyday things you can do for your health. With juicing, you can take in far more nutrients from fresh fruits and vegetables than you ever could just by eating them straight. These nutrients both protect us from disease and boost our health and vitality.  For example, it’s easy to consume the nutrients of a couple of pounds of carrots in a day if you juice them. While carrots are well known to be rich in Vitamin A and help with our night vision, carrot juice is also a great juice to detoxify the liver. This means your liver can process out more of the chemicals that most people are regularly exposed to. Because your liver is also your prime fat burning organ, detoxifying your liver also means it’s easier to lose excess weight.  If you add some beets to your carrot juice, you can also take in hearty doses of betalains, which raises your body’s detoxification enzymes. This helps your body process out even more manmade chemicals that, without detoxification methods, can be hard to remove. Greens of any sort are another favorite for juicing. Greens are powerful because they add lots of chlorophyll to the body, a powerful blood cleanser and blood builder. With juicing, you can add in lots of fabulously healthy vegetables that you might not otherwise include much of in your diet (and these juices are delicious, too).

Tip Of The Month

When Is A Headache “Just A Headache” & When Is It A Medical Emergency?

Have you ever had a headache?  Most people have. Some get them quite frequently.  Well, has this thought ever crossed your mind: “Is this just another headache… or is this something serious?”  That is an important question that could save you or a loved one’s life.  But, before we differentiate headaches, the first thing to understand is that there is no such thing as “just a headache.”  While some are MORE dangerous and even life threatening, all headaches are a sign that something is wrong.  Know this: Pain is not normal.  It is your body’s way of telling you there is a problem.  For example, if you put your hand too close to a fire, it hurts.  The closer you get… the more it hurts.  Too close, and it starts to burn.  If you have a headache, there is a cause.  Your body is sending you warning signals and you should be examined by a health care professional trained to diagnose headaches, their causes and treatment options.  Chiropractors are trained to diagnose many types of headaches and have had success treating one of the most common types of headaches, the cervicogenic headache. A cervicogenic headache is a headache that is characterized by chronic head pain that is referred to the head from either bony structures or soft tissue of the neck.  So, if you get headaches, a Chiropractor is a good option for both diagnosis and treatment.

Now, what you should know about headaches and medical emergencies?  In a recent article in Tribune Newspapers, Joshua Miller, Medical Director at the Cleveland Clinic’s Strongsville Family Health Center, said, “The headaches that worry us are ones that start suddenly, like a thunderclap… especially if it’s accompanied by a stiff neck, nausea, fever, bright lights bothering your eyes… it could be bleeding on the brain, encephalitis, meningitis or some other viral or bacterial infection within the spinal fluid.”

Here are other signs and symptoms of a medical emergency:  Chest pain and squeezing/tightness of the chest, nausea and shortness of breath, and fluttering heart.   If you feel short of breath after doing an everyday task you usually do not get shortness of breath from, you should not ignore it.  Also, abdominal pain should not be ignored.  Fever, abdominal pain, vomiting can mean big trouble.  Kidney stones and gallbladder disease are possibilities.  Bottom line: you should not try to diagnose yourself.  No headaches are “normal” and sometimes, they can be quite serious.

Remember, we’re always here to help your body heal

and maintain the pain free body you deserve.

WEEKLY HEALTH NEWS UPDATE

Week of Monday, April 30th, 2012

Mental Attitude: Meditation. Adults with memory impairment and memory loss may benefit from mantra-based meditation (12 minutes of meditation per day for 8 weeks). Mantra-based meditation has demonstrated a positive effect on patients’ emotional responses to stress, fatigue and anxiety. Findings revealed a substantial increase in cerebral blood flow in the patients’ prefrontal, superior frontal, and superior parietal cortices, and also better cognitive function.

Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine, March 2012

Health Alert: Diabetics And Stroke. 26 million Americans have diabetes, and more than half are younger than 65. The longer you have diabetes, the higher your risk for stroke. Compared to people without diabetes (after considering other factors such as age, smoking history, physical activity, history of heart disease, blood pressure and cholesterol), the risk of stroke increased 70% in people with diabetes for less than 5 years, 80% in people with diabetes for 5-10 years and three- fold in people with diabetes for 10 years or more. American Heart Association, March 2012

Diet: Seeing Things? Hungry people see food-related words more clearly than people who’ve just eaten. This change in vision happens at the earliest perceptual stages, before higher parts of the brain have a chance to change the messages coming from the eyes. Psychological Science, March 2012

Exercise: Good Reasons. Exercise helps to alleviate low-back pain, helps to reduce the amount of insulin required to control blood sugar levels in Type I (insulin-dependent) diabetics and improves mental alertness.

Surgeon General’s Report on Physical Activity and Health, 1996

Chiropractic: Hold Your Head Up! “Head in forward posture can add up to thirty pounds of abnormal leverage on the cervical spine. This can pull the entire spine out of alignment. Forward head posture (FHP) may result in the loss of 30% of vital lung capacity. These breath-related effects are primarily due to the loss of the cervical lordosis, which blocks the action of the hyoid muscles, especially the inferior hyoid responsible for helping lift the first rib during inhalation.”

~Rene Cailliet M.D., famous medical author and former Director of the Department of Physical Medicine and

Rehabilitation at the University of Southern California

Wellness/Prevention: Avoid Absenteeism. The US is losing $226 billion per year due to employee absenteeism. A worker is less likely to take sick leave if their supervisor offers support (lightened work load or stress management training) when an employee is experiencing psychosomatic stress symptoms. The worker feels inclined to reciprocate the supportive treatment by keeping their work effort high.

WEEKLY HEALTH NEWS UPDATE

Week of Monday, April 23rd, 2012

Mental Attitude: Get Your Sleep! Older adults with poor sleep habits have an altered immune system response to stress that may increase their risk for mental and physical health problems. Stress leads to significantly larger increases in a marker of inflammation in poor sleepers compared to good sleepers; a marker associated with poor health outcomes and death. Poor sleepers report more depressive symptoms, more loneliness and more global perceived stress relative to good sleepers. As people age, a gradual decline in the immune system occurs, along with an increase in inflammation. Heightened inflammation increases the risk for cardiovascular disease, diabetes and other illnesses, as well as psychiatric problems. American Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry, March 2012

Health Alert: Slow Down — You Move Too Fast? People who are considered ambitious, attend the best colleges and universities, have prestigious careers and earn high salaries don’t necessarily lead more successful lives. Ambition has its positive effects (in terms of career success, it certainly does) but ambitious people are only slightly happier than their less- ambitious counterparts and they actually live somewhat shorter lives.

Journal of Applied Psychology, March 2012

Diet: Fish Oil. Six weeks of supplementation with fish oil significantly increased lean mass and decreased fat mass in test subjects. International Journal of Sport Nutrition and Exercise Metabolism, October 2010

Exercise: Good Reasons. Exercise helps you maintain proper muscle balance, reduces the rate and severity of medical complications associated with hypertension, helps alleviate menstrual symptoms and lowers your heart rate response to submaximal physical exertion. Surgeon General’s Report on Physical Activity and Health, 1996

Chiropractic: Adjustment or Microdiskectomy for Sciatica? 60% of patients with sciatica (symptoms of unilateral lumbar radiculopathy secondary to lumbar disk herniation at L3-4, L4-5, or L5-S1) who had failed other medical management (patients must have failed at least 3 months of nonoperative management including treatment with analgesics, lifestyle modification, physiotherapy, massage therapy, and/or acupuncture) benefited from spinal manipulation to the same degree as if they underwent surgical intervention. JMPT, October 2010

Wellness/Prevention: Dark Chocolate Good For The Heart. A flavonoid called epicatechin, found in dark chocolate, enhances mitochondria structure in people with advanced heart failure and type 2 diabetes. Mitochondria are cellular structures that provide the energy a cell requires in order to move, divide, and contract. Both heart failure and type 2 diabetes impair these cells, resulting in abnormalities in skeletal muscle. In individuals with diabetes and heart failure, these abnormalities in the heart and skeletal muscle cause decreased functional capacity, resulting in difficulty walking even short distances, shortness of breath, and a lack of energy.

WEEKLY HEALTH NEWS UPDATE

Week of Monday, April 16th, 2012

Mental Attitude: Music and Emotions. Music can evoke positive emotions, which in turn can lower stress levels. In a survey study, positive emotions were experienced more often and more intensively in connection with music listening. The more the participants liked the music, the less stress they experienced. To get the positive effects of music, you have to listen to music you like. University of Gothenburg, March 2012

Health Alert: Slow Brain Growth In Babies Linked To Depression During Pregnancy! Many women experience a roller coaster of emotions during pregnancy: stress, confusion, fear, sadness and depression. Babies whose mothers are depressed during pregnancy have a greater chance of growing slower, resulting in the head and body showing retarded growth. Also, antidepressants increase the risk of slow growth in the development of babies’ brains.

Archives of General Psychiatry, March 2012

Diet: High-Fat Diets Increase Colon Cancer Risk. Eating too much fat and sugar puts a person at greater risk for colon cancer and obesity. In normal tissue from patients with colon cancer, they found that epigenetic marks on genes involved in breaking down carbohydrates, lipids and amino acids (abundant in the fatty Western diet) appeared to have been retrained. Epigenetic marks are chemical modifications that serve as on/off switches for many genes. These foods are changing the methylation patterns on a person’s insulin genes so that they express differently, pumping out more insulin than the body requires. Cancer Prevention Research, March 2012

Exercise: Exercise Linked To Change In DNA. Exercise almost immediately alters DNA in healthy but inactive men and women. Although the genetic makeup is not altered, DNA molecules change structurally and chemically when a person exercises. One researcher noted, “Our muscles are really plastic. We often say ‘You are what you eat.’ Well, muscle adapts to what you do. If you don’t use it, you lost it and this is one of the mechanisms that allow that to happen.”

Cell Metabolism, March 2012

Chiropractic: Is Chiropractic Safe? YES. Chiropractic’s non-surgical, drug-free approach to health places it among the safest of all health care practices. Remember, chiropractic takes nothing out of the body and puts nothing in. As a result, chiropractors enjoy one of the lowest malpractice rates of all health care professionals.

Wellness/Prevention: How Much Selenium? While too much selenium may result in the development of type 2 diabetes, high selenium intake has been shown to protect against certain cancers, such as lung, colorectal, bladder, and prostate cancer. It also increases male fertility and has positive effects on antiviral function. Low selenium intake has been linked to memory and brain decline, low immune system quality, and a greater risk of death. The Lancet, March 2012

University of Colorado Research: Grape Seed Extract Kills Head And Neck Cancer Cells –

Leaves Healthy Cells Unharmed!

New Research shows the seeds of grapes

reduce certain tumor growth by 67% and 65%!

Also in this issue:

  • Did you get “Broken Heart Syndrome” after Valentine’s Day?
  • Research: 10 Minute Massage helps reduce inflammation in muscles
  • Regular use of vitamins and minerals could reduce colon cancer risk?
  • The Super Bowl Story More Important Than The Game: Mark Herzlich’s “tweet heard ‘round the world” about defeating cancer.

Houston – Not too long ago, this was a common saying by doctors all across the country: “Vitamins and supplements have no scientific proof.  To be healthy, all you have to do is eat right.  The only thing vitamins will do for you is give you expensive urine.”

Things have changed…

For example, a recent study done by researchers at the University of Colorado and published in the Journal of Carcinogenesis revealed great news about grape seed extract.

According to ColoradoCancerBlogs.org: A study published this week… shows that in both cell lines and mouse models, grape seed extract (GSE) kills head and neck squamous carcinoma cells, while leaving healthy cells unharmed.

“It’s a rather dramatic effect,” says Rajesh Agarwal, PhD, investigator at the University of Colorado Cancer Center and Professor at the Skaggs School of Pharmaceutical Sciences.

It depends in large part, says Agarwal, on a healthy cell’s ability to wait out damage.

“Cancer cells are fast-growing cells,” Agarwal says. “Not only that, but they are necessarily fast growing. When conditions exist in which they can’t grow, they die.”

Grape seed extract creates conditions that are unfavorable to the growth of cancer cells by both damaing the cancer cells’ DNA and inhibiting the pathways that allow repair. But, according to Agarwal, “… we saw absolutely no toxicity to the mice, themselves.”

The article also stated: “Again, the grape seed extract killed the cancer cells but not the healthy cells.”

Here’s some incredible information from the actual abstract of the study (GSE = Grape Seed Extract and HNSCC = Head and neck squamous cell carcinoma): “GSE feeding to nude mice decreased Detroit 562 and FaDu xenograft tumor growth by 67% and 65% (p<0.001), respectively. In IHC analysis, xenografts from GSE-fed groups showed decreased proliferation but increased DNA damage and apoptosis. Together, these findings show that GSE targets both DNA damage and repair, and provide mechanistic insights for its efficacy selectively against HNSCC both in cell culture and mouse xenograft; supporting its translational potential against HNSCC.”

In other words, in this study, grape seed extract reduced the growth of certain cancers by up to 67%, lowered the rate of progression of deadly tumors and DNA damage while inducing apoptosis (programmed cell death) of the cancer cells. Mice have been used to study specific cancer cell lines because they parallel tumor progression and metastasis in a manner similar to humans.

This is extremely important information and here is why…

Head and neck squamous cell carcinoma accounts for 6% of all malignancies in the United States.  Nearly 12,000 people die from this form of cancer every year in the United States. As always, more research needs to be done, but the implications here are extremely exciting.  Who knows how many lives might be saved by all-natural grape seed extract?

Even more important, how many lives might be saved as more and more research is done on other natural substances and supplements to help treat disease, possibly without the side effects of current drugs?

One great example is a study published online on December 20, 2011.   The study published in the Canadian Journal of Physiology and Pharmacology (CJPP) found that rats given regular multivitamin and mineral supplements showed a significantly lower risk of developing colon cancer when they were exposed to carcinogens.

Another example is Vitamin D.  According to Science Daily, a recent study published in the British Medical Journal found: “Participants with the highest levels of blood Vitamin D concentration had a nearly 40% decrease in colorectal cancer risk when compared to those with the lowest levels.”

Broken Heart Syndrome

Is A Real Condition!!!

If you think you are having a heart attack, you might not be.  You might be suffering from “Broken Heart Syndrome.”

Broken Heart Syndrome, also called stress cardiomyopathy, has symptoms similar to a heart attack such as chest pain and difficulty breathing.

Broken Heart Syndrome often occurs during stressful emotional times.  For example, symptoms can often arise after a painful break-up, the death of a spouse, the loss of a job or extreme anger.

Dr. Binh An Phan, a Cardiologist from Loyola University Health System said, “The good news is that, over time, the symptoms go away. And unlike heart attack patients, people with Broken Heart Syndrome do not suffer lasting damage to their hearts.  Most people will get better in a few weeks without medical treatment.

“During an extremely stressful event, the heart can be overwhelmed with a surge of adrenalin and other stress hormones. This can cause a narrowing of the arteries that supply blood to the heart. It’s similar to what happens during a heart attack, when a blood clot in a coronary artery restricts blood supply to heart muscles. But unlike a heart attack, Broken Heart Syndrome is reversible.”

Did You Miss The Super Bowl

Tweet Heard ‘Round The World?

The Third-String Linebacker For The New York Giants Didn’t Make It Into The Game

But His “Tweet” About Surviving Cancer Was More Important Than Winning It All…

We hear about the superstars every day.  You know, the athletes who star in the big game and make the big plays.  Eli Manning.  Tom Brady.  Most were gifted from birth and their exceptional genetic gifts and strong work ethics have them leading special, if not privileged lives.

Who knows how many little kids are running around New York and the rest of the country wearing an Eli Manning jersey while trying to be just like him in the pick-up football game at school?  One of those kids may be gifted enough, driven enough and lucky enough to be like him some day.

But, those are long odds indeed.  So many pieces of the puzzle must fall into place for that dream to come true.  God-given talent becomes useless if you don’t work hard enough or are unlucky enough to suffer a bad knee injury.

But, there is another football player every single kid (and person) can actually be like, no matter what gene pool you came from or how short, pudgy and slow you are. That player’s name is Mark Herzlich.  He’s a third string linebacker for the New York Giants. I bet you didn’t even see him on the sidelines on Super Bowl Sunday.  So, why is he so special?  It all started with the Tweet heard ‘round the world…

“2 years ago I was told I might never walk again. Just WALKED off

a plane in Indy to play in The #SuperBowl. #Take That****Cancer.”

As you can imagine, his tweet went viral.  It was re-tweeted by countless people. You might have even seen that tweet but not known the full story behind it.

“Walking off the plane made me think back to how far I had come,” Herzlich said. “Walking down those steps, I remember walking with a limp after my surgery and trying to walk anywhere, so walking down steps again was amazing. I didn’t think the tweet would get that much exposure, but I’m glad it did because it reached a lot more people than I had anticipated in terms of giving them hope. That’s what defeating cancer is all about.”

Herzlich was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer (Ewing’s sarcoma) in his left leg during his senior year as an All-American at Boston College.  After surgery, he vowed to come back and play football again.  He found motivation in his highlight video and strong family support.  Never giving up, he beat cancer and made it all the way to the Super Bowl.

Herzlich added 10,000 followers to his twitter account shortly after he sent that tweet.  One follower wrote, “Obviously, this week is all about football and all about playing, but there are people out there who are going through cancer right now who see that and say, ‘Hey, if he is doing it, I can do it too.’”

That’s right… not everyone can play in the Super Bowl… but everyone can be like Eric Herzlich and never give up.

Tips Of The Month

Research Shows A 10 Minute Massage

Reduces Muscle Inflammation…

Do you have aches and pain? After you wake up in the morning, are you stiff and does it take you a little time to “get going?”  Do your back and neck just feel stiff and sore?  If you answered “Yes” to any of these questions, then a massage may be just what you are looking for.

Here is why:  According to Science Daily, researchers at McMaster University have discovered a massage as short as 10 minutes can help reduce inflammation in muscles.  This is important because inflammation is a major source of stiffness and pain. “As a non-drug therapy, massage holds the potential to help not just bone-weary athletes but those with inflammation-related chronic conditions such as arthritis or muscular dystrophy,” says Justin Crane, a doctoral student in the Department of Kinesiology at McMaster.  While massage is well-accepted as a therapy for relieving muscle tension and pain, the researchers delved deeper to find it also triggers biochemical sensors that can send inflammation-reducing signals to muscle cells.

“The main thing, and what is novel about our study, is that no one has ever looked inside the muscle to see what is happening with massage, no one looked at the biochemical effects or what might be going on in the muscle itself,” said Crane.  “We have shown the muscle senses that it is being stretched and this appears to reduce the cells’ inflammatory response… As a consequence, massage may be beneficial for recovery from injury.”

Crane was surprised that only 10 minutes of massage had such a dramatic effect, especially considering the exercise performed in the study was strenuous and 70 minutes in duration.  The article goes on to report that the results of this research “hint that massage therapy blunts muscle pain by the same biological mechanisms as most pain medications and could be an effective alternative.”  It also showed that one long held “truth” about massage might be false.  In the study, massage did NOT help clear lactic acid from the exercised muscles.

Mental Attitude: The Brain, Aggression & The Media. Research over the past few decades has shown that viewing physical violence in the media can increase aggression in adults and children. A new study has also found that onscreen relational aggression (including social exclusion, gossip and emotional bullying) may prime the brain for aggression. Aggressive Behavior, March 2012

Health Alert: Don’t Be Like A Brit? Britons are dying early because of ignorance and denial of cancer symptoms. If Britain matched the best cancer survival rates in Europe, 11,500 fewer people would die every year. Matching just the European average would save 6,000-7,000 lives every year. Britain’s poor record in early diagnosis is to blame. A survey asked Britons about warning signs and symptoms of cancer. 75% failed to mention pain, coughing, bladder and bowel problems; 66% failed to list bleeding; and only 25% mentioned weight loss or mole changes. 37% who spotted early signs of cancer said they may delay getting checked because they worried about the result. 37% said they may delay getting symptoms checked because it would be difficult to make an appointment to see their GP. 25% said it might be a waste of their doctor’s time. Cancer Research, 2012

Diet: Added Sugar, Obesity And Diabetes. Fructose intake from added sugar is linked with the epidemic rise in obesity, metabolic syndrome and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. Metabolic syndrome is a group of risk factors that raises a person’s risk for diabetes, heart disease, stroke, and other health problems. Metabolic syndrome currently affects 25% of Americans. If you compared two diets of similar calorie intake (more fructose vs. more starch), the higher fructose diet will lead to greater accumulation of fat around organs and higher insulin resistance.

Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, March 2012

Exercise: Take A Break From Sitting. Interrupting prolonged periods of sitting with regular, two-minute breaks of light or moderate intensity activity, like walking, may be good for overweight and obese people’s health. Such activity helps their bodies keep glucose and insulin levels under control after consuming a high calorie meal.

Wellness/Prevention: Vitamin D And Fractures. Vitamin D intake can lower stress fracture risk in girls, especially in regards to injuries caused by high impact activities. There was no evidence that calcium and dairy intakes were protective against developing a stress fracture or that soda intake was predictive of an increased risk of stress fracture or confounded the association between dairy, calcium or vitamin D intakes and fracture risk.

Mental Attitude: Memory and Stress. Anyone who has ever experienced chronic stress knows it can take a toll on both your emotions and your ability to think clearly. Researchers have discovered a neural mechanism that directly links repeated stress with impaired memory. This study also provides critical insight into why stress responses can act as a trigger for mental illnesses. Neuron, March 2012

Health Alert: Sleeping Pill Dangers! Sleeping pill sales increased by 23% from 2006-2010 and generated about $2 billion in annual sales. Sleeping pills (including Ambien and Restoril) are linked to a 4.6 times higher risk of death and a significant increase in cancer. Among patients who were prescribed just 1-18 sleeping pills per year, the risk of death was

3.6 times higher. Rates of new cancers were 35% higher among patients who were prescribed at least 132 doses a year, compared with those who did not receive prescriptions. BMJ Open, March 2012

Diet: Rosemary Essential Oil On My Mind? Blood levels of a rosemary oil component correlate with improved cognitive performance. Results indicate, for the first time in human subjects, that concentration of 1,8-cineole in the blood is related to an individual’s cognitive performance, with higher concentrations resulting in improved performance. Both speed and accuracy were improved, suggesting that the relationship is not describing a speed-accuracy trade off. Therapeutic Advances in Psychopharmacology, March 2012

Exercise: Yoga And Stress. Yoga may be effective for stress-related psychological and medical conditions such as depression, anxiety, high blood pressure and cardiac disease. The theory could be used to develop specific mind-body practices for the prevention and treatment of these conditions in conjunction with standard treatments.

Medical Hypotheses, March 2012

Chiropractic: Safety of Adjusting. No one pays closer attention to injury statistics than Malpractice Insurance carriers. Scott Haldeman, M.D., D.C. reviewed malpractice claims records for a 10-year period between 1988 and 1997. In reviewing 134.5 million chiropractic adjustments, there were 23 cases of stroke or vertebral artery dissection. 10 of these had complicating factors such as high blood pressure, use of oral contraceptives, or a history of smoking, all associated with vascular disease. The incidence of stroke or vertebral artery dissection following neck adjustments was one per 5.85 million. On average, a chiropractor would have to work for 1430 years (48 full chiropractic careers) for this to happen once! Driving to the office is probably more dangerous. Canadian Medical Association Journal, 2001

Wellness/Prevention: Irregular Heartbeat? An irregular heartbeat, atrial fibrillation, is a strong predictor of cognitive decline and the loss of independence in daily activities in older people at risk of cardiovascular disease. This is just another good reason to maintain your heart health and get checked to prevent heart problems.

Mental Attitude: Standby Mode? When the metabolic energy supply to brain cells is low (such as in comatose patients, in babies with serious neurodevelopmental disorders, and for a short period in some babies born prematurely) the brain enters a state called “burst suppression.” Researchers believe burst suppression is a type of intermittent standby mode, where cells remain inactive until metabolic energy levels increase enough to resume normal brain activity.

Health Alert: Stomach This? The bacterium Helicobacter pylori is found in the stomachs of half the world’s population. Although persistent infection with H. pylori increases an individual’s risk of developing stomach cancer, it also decreases the risk of developing asthma. Researchers found that H. pylori modulated immune cells known as dendritic cells such that they did not activate an aggressive immune response but instead activated what is known as a tolerogenic immune response, which ultimately protects against allergic asthma.

Journal Of Clinical Investigation, Feb 2012

Diet: Weight On The Brain? One-third of US adults are obese. A big part of the environment that encourages weight gain is the availability and consumption of calorie dense, high-fat foods. In particular, what we eat can alter the brain regions that regulate body weight. Leptin is a key hormone secreted from fat tissue and its main function is to inhibit appetite. Eating a high-fat diet reduces the actions of leptin in the brain. This miscommunication can lead to increased food intake and weight gain. Evolutionary speaking, we are designed to want to eat foods high in fat and gain weight because it made it easier to survive times when food was scarce. That is no longer a real concern since food is always available, but we still have a biological desire to eat calorie dense foods. Cell Metabolism, Feb 2012

Exercise: Good Reasons. Exercise helps you maintain proper muscle balance, reduces the rate and severity of medical complications associated with hypertension, and helps to alleviate certain menstrual symptoms.

Surgeon General’s Report on Physical Activity and Health, 1996

Chiropractic: Growing. In 1970, there were an estimated 13,000 chiropractors in the United States. In 1990, the number swelled to approx. 40,000. As of 2012, there are nearly 58,000 licensed chiropractors in the United States.

Agency for Health Care Policy and Research, 1997 & MPA Media, 2012

Wellness/Prevention: Fish Oil. Omega-3 fatty acids help adolescents and young adults (ages 12-25) who are at elevated risk for severe psychiatric disorders to function better in school, work and other social environments.
